Part of the large part of the Etiology of weight gain is an incredibly strong feedback loop – And I’m not talking about insulin or leptin or some other hormone. No, I’m talking about something MUCH stronger. But before we go any further, lets clarify what I mean by Etiology. Etiology is basically the study of why something occurs, and in my opinion the only thing more important that finding a cure for obesity is understanding why it occurs in the first place. As I stated earlier this goes far beyond hormone imbalances or sugar cravings. Also, let’s be clear – overeating is the tool, it’s the hammer, or the nails… it’s what ‘makes’ us gain weight… but it may not be the ‘why’ that causes us to be gain weight… to find the ‘why’ we have to go all the way to the root – Why we overeat in the first place…And I’m convinced that a large part of the etiology of weight gain, or more correctly a part of the etiology of some forms of weight gain (I’m of the belief that they’re not all the same), is the feedback loop created by the affect that our emotions have on how we eat.For many of us, we over eat as a way to deal with our depression, boredom, loneliness or general unhappiness with our day-to-day lives.

Meat Leads to Inflammation? Thursday, December 26th, 2013 Written by: Kevin Cann             Here we go again.  Another study was just published that showed how dangerous and deadly eating meat is.  This research study came out of Harvard University and we all know how wicked smaht they are.  But before you replace your grass-fed burger with tofu, let us take a look at this research study.            For those of you who have not seen this study, the abstract is here, http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/nature12820.html and there was a write-up done by NPR here, http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2013/12/10/250007042/chowing-down-on-meat-and-dairy-alters-gut-bacteria-a-lot-and-quickly?sc=tw&cc=share.  In a nutshell the researchers were looking at the gut microbiome and how it responds to two different diets; an all animal based diet and an all plant based diet.  The study concluded with the researcher stating the following:“Finally, increases in the abundance and activity of Bilophila wadsworthia on the animal-based diet support a link between dietary fat, bile acids and the outgrowth of microorganisms capable of triggering inflammatory bowel disease. In concert, these results demonstrate that the gut microbiome can rapidly respond to altered diet, potentially facilitating the diversity of human dietary lifestyles.”In other words the researchers concluded that an animal based diet increases a microbe that causes inflammation.  Before we go any further let us look at this animal based diet.  One of the researchers, Lawrence David, stated that “Breakfast was eggs and bacon.  Lunch was ribs and brisket, and then for dinner, it was salami and prosciutto with an assortment of cheeses.  The volunteers had pork rinds for snacks.”  This looks very similar to the Paleo diet that Dr.

BOSS’s programming and recommendations are someone unique compared with the average international exercise physiology or strength and conditioning organization. It is also unique compared with what you’d see on the CrossFit main site or Jillian Michael’s blog. I’m often asked, when the rest of the world is saying that the best way to lose weight is aerobic exercise, why do we say high-intensity interval exercise is better? If you continue to read this blog and learn more about BOSS’s programming model, you’ll soon learn that I’m a geek. Being a geek whose job it is to advance exercise science, I am always questioning exercise programming models

Exercise training has received increasing recognition as a cornerstone in the prevention and treatment of T2D. Emerging research suggests that resistance training (RT) has the power to combat metabolic dysfunction in patients with T2D and seems to be an effective measure to improve overall metabolic health and reduce metabolic risk factors in diabetic patients. However, there is limited mechanistic insight into how these adaptations occur

If you are like many people I know, after Thanksgiving you feel terrible about the food choices you made and think you have totally blown your “diet.” Some will decide to take matters into their own hands immediately and get back on track. Others may start the spiral downward till New Years and let all their hard work for the year be sabotaged. And then there are those who may have heard about new research on intermittent fasting and think that’s the way to undo the holiday damage. In an unpublished study of 26 obese adults, those who fasted completely every other day and ate with no restrictions the rest of the time lost about the same amount of weight in two months as those who didn’t fast at all. But four months later, after patients were off the intervention, those who had the initial “intermittent fasting” intervention had dropped more pounds and had greater improvements in memory than those on a standard diet. [Tweet this.]Study author William Troy Donahoo, Ph.D., said at a conference that the difference in weight loss may have been due to people continuing to fast after the study ended, or that fasting somehow changes your metabolism. So should we all jump on this bandwagon

If you’ve been even remotely involved in the nutrition or fitness community over the past few years, you at least know the term intermittent fasting (IF). Enthusiasts praise its pattern of orchestrated eating and abstaining for everything from improved immunity to mental clarity and, of course, fast fat loss.IF involves periods of alternately eating and fasting. Beyond that, definitions widely vary. Some people do IF for hours each day, while others fast for 24 – 36 hours once or twice a week.

Heres an important word for your body to learn: Tabata. Its the name of a form of interval training that relies on a simple pattern of 20 seconds of exercise followed by 10 seconds of rest. That doesnt sound so bad, but once you repeat the cycle eight times a standard round of Tabata it can be enough to make you see stars.

Contemporary scientific evidence suggest that you have to pick the right type of (short intense) exercise if you don’t want your beta alanine supplement to end up as another “false starter” in your closet. In the past couple of weeks beta alanine (BA) has gotten some bad press, here at the SuppVersity. While some conspiracy theorists may already have smelled a personal vendetta of a sodium bicarbonate advocate like myself against its ‘high tech competitor’, the actual reason for the negative, or at least not necessarily exciting news is the exercise specificity of beta alanine (BA) supplementation. The most recent BA study from the University of Bern and the Swiss Federal Institute of Sport in Switzerland and the Karolinska University Hospital in Sweden is yet another rather disappointing BA study to support my previous assertion that the benefits for the average gymrat are largely overblown. What did the researchers do As Gross et al. point out, the aim of their two-part intervention study was to alter the physiological systems discussed above in ways that could improve severe exercise performance

So what is this whole intermittent fasting thing?Do you remember when I wrote about Bulletproof Coffee not too long ago? I HAD to checkout bulletproof coffee because of the claims, you know; a cup of coffee that will leave you energized for hours, eliminate any crashes, help you burn fat, gain muscle, defy gravity, etc..Well, that is what intermittent fasting is starting to sound like. Strategic meal planning (or skipping) that will help you gain muscle, lose fat and be the healthiest human on the planet…Sounds worthy of investigation for the End of Three Fitness Army!To drink the intermittent fasting kool-aid, or not to drink the intermittent fasting kool-aid, that is the question. But first, what am I talking about…inter-what? fast-who?What is intermittent fastingThe ‘F-word’ is a pretty scary word for most…Fasting.Do you turn into Betty White when you don’t eat (watch here if that doesn’t make sense)?
