Fitness Tips / Move / October 5, 2014A Fat-Melting HIIT Workout Plan that Works! The right kind of workout can keep you torching calories long after you leave the gym. Here’s the real secret to melting maximum fat.Science proves that high intensity interval training burns more fat in less time than a steady-state approach. When done strategically, HIIT can also trigger afterburn, in which your body uses calories at an increased rate for up to 24 hours post-workout. Interval training isn’t new, but exercise physiologists at Orangetheory Fitness (OTF), a hot workout studio with more than 110 locations nationwide, have packaged the concept into metabolically charged routines that guarantee you’ll stay in the zone all day.The Science of AfterburnWorkouts that rev your metabolism long after you leave the gym may sound too good to be true, but the science is solid. “It takes oxygen and energy (calories) for your body to return to resting after exercise—that’s excess postexercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), or the afterburn,” says Christopher Scott, Ph.D., an exercise physiologist and associate professor at the University of Southern Maine.

Get the printable version of this seven-minute HIIT workout here! When it comes to high-intensity interval training (HIIT), the pros definitely outweigh the cons. While it may feel unpleasant to push your body to go faster and harder for that short time period, the rewards are worth it: HIIT helps you blast more belly fat, save time, and burn way more calories (even after your workout is long over) than a lower-intensity workout alone. A recent study published in the American College of Sports Medicine’s Health and Fitness Journal found that a few minutes of training at almost your max can accomplish all of this in way less time than a traditional workout.

Call it Intermittent Fasting (IF), alternate day fasting, 5:2 Diet, 4:3 Diet, 18-hour Diet, Every Other Day Diet, Fast Diet or Starvation Diet, but going without food for a period of time each week continues to gain attention in the scientific community. Classic animal studies linking calorie restriction to longevity have suggested protection against obesity, type 2 diabetes, inflammation, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and reduced metabolic risk factors associated with cancer while improving markers of cardiovascular aging (1). Long-term daily caloric restriction is difficult to maintain in humans as it often induces weight re-gain and non-compliance.

If I had to lose weight with maximum speed and I had minimum time (either daily or time to weight loss target…say, a wedding) I would do four things: 1) Intermittent Fasting 2) Tabata whole-body sprints: Kettlebells, Club-bells, or Bodyweight (say, Burpees) four times a week, 20 seconds work/10 seconds rest, for 20 minutes. 3) Drink a gallon of water a day. 4) Journal my dreams, thoughts, emotions, and actions. About five years ago, I started Intermittent fasting, after accidentally encountering the topic while researching caloric restriction. It is the easiest, simplest, most effective means of weight control I’ve ever heard of

Re-address Blog Comment from Jon from Podcast 57:I think a discussion on what the re-introduction of foods and the subsequent reactions to them means and why would be very interesting as a podcast topic. The paleo concept has expanded a lot from the original ‘cavemen did this so you should to’ logic of guys like cordain (another thing mentioned recently on the show, how robb has become more science orientated because of matt lalonde), but I still think at times robb reverts back to the ‘re- introduce it and see how you feel’ logical fallacy too often, because I bet almost any food completely eliminated for 30 days and then re-introduced would have negative effects and may take a few months to re-sensitive yourself to, so a talk on why this matters (scientifically preferable rather than anecdotally) would be important.

BOSS’s programming and recommendations are someone unique compared with the average international exercise physiology or strength and conditioning organization. It is also unique compared with what you’d see on the CrossFit main site or Jillian Michael’s blog. I’m often asked, when the rest of the world is saying that the best way to lose weight is aerobic exercise, why do we say high-intensity interval exercise is better? If you continue to read this blog and learn more about BOSS’s programming model, you’ll soon learn that I’m a geek. Being a geek whose job it is to advance exercise science, I am always questioning exercise programming models

Previous researchers have found that CrossFit is able to improve both maximum aerobic capacity and body composition. However, the same researchers found that there may be concerns regarding the level of injury risk in participation. To assess whether there really is a large injury risk inherent in CrossFit, the following study was performed…The Study: The nature and prevalence of injury during CrossFit training, by Hak, Hodzovic, and Hickey, in The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, Publish Ahead of PrintWhat’s the background? Not that long ago, Bret published a guest post on this blog that reviewed the first study into CrossFit. That study found that CrossFit-type programs combined with the Paleo Diet produced meaningful improvements in both body composition and VO2-max in both men and women of all levels of fitness.

HIIT is a builder, not a burner – it builds the powerplants you need to burn. For you as loyal SuppVersity readers, the fact that HIIT is the #1 growth promoter for your mitochondria is no news. That 4×4 minutes of HIIT per week are yet already enough to promote significant increases in the mitochondrial counterpart of mTOR, PGC-1? – the master regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis (Wu. 1999) – will probably still comes as a surprise.
