Back in 2017, I started to notice a new kitchen color trend emerging. I never expected it and I certainly didn’t expect it to still be cool in 2018. Any guesses? The photo above is a big hint. The color: mint green!

Mint green — a barely there, optimistic, soothing hue — works well in the kitchen because it’s a color reminiscent of a sweet confection. Here are some different ways in which I’ve seen mint green used in the kitchen recently.

A newly opened Starbucks cafe staffed entirely by senior citizens has opened in Mexico City, perhaps another sign that the company is making good on promises to create a more inclusive workforce.

According to WXPI, Starbucks partnered with the National Institute for the Elderly to “spearhead a program of labor inclusion,” giving its older adults an income boost at the same time. Currently, only seven seniors are employed at the store, all between the ages of 55 and 66 (although they are currently being trained by a younger contingent of staffers).

If you’re worried about the elderly employees’ well-being, know that Starbucks has their backs: The seniors only work six-and-a-half-hour shifts, and are guaranteed two days off per week. Plus, their medical needs are fully covered by insurance.

Even when I don’t have a plan (which is most of the time, these days) there are certain things I always make during my meal prep sessions. At the top of that list? A pot or rice of grains. It’s a blank canvas that can be easily turned into a wide variety of meals during the week. Most recipes specifically call for things like brown rice, quinoa, farro, or bulgur to name a few, but the truth is that grains can almost always be used interchangeably. It will sometimes result in a different texture, but I think that’s one way to keep tried-and-true recipes interesting.

No matter what kind of grains you cooked up, here are 20 delicious ways to turn them into breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Sometimes all it takes is $10 to buy a truly great (possibly even life-changing) item for your kitchen. That’s right — it’s not all about the Vitamix blenders and KitchenAid stand mixers! We polled Kitchn editors to see what things they’ve bought lately (for $10 or less) that they’re shockingly excited about.

Nigella Lawson recently appeared on “The Sporkful” podcast, where she spoke lovingly of Colman’s Mustard. The British condiment is to her what hot sauce is to Beyoncé (read: always in her bag). “To me, it’s kind of like ketchup,” she told host Dan Pashman. “I want it with everything.”

While that’s the British TV cook and prolific cookbook author’s go-to condiment, her favorite full-on meal might surprise you — because it’s not quite a meal at all.

We all know eating vegetables is an important component of a well-rounded diet, but figuring out when to slot them in is the tricky part. Sure, you can toss a bunch of spinach into a breakfast smoothie and swear off everything but salad for lunch, but I think there’s an even easier way to boost you and your family’s intake of the good stuff: Add a shared vegetable plate to your nightly dinner table.

Kitchn’s My Superpowered Morning shows you how smart, interesting people use their morning routine to help them fuel their days and get it all done.

Kerry Diamond’s latest mission is fueled by coffee. When she’s not publishing the most gorgeous food magazine and elevating voices of kick-ass women as the editorial director of Cherry Bombe, or hosting the Radio Cherry Bombe podcast, you can find Kerry at Smith Canteen, her Carroll Gardens coffee shop, where she’s plotting and scheming to make it the greenest coffee spot in Brooklyn.

Think about the last weekday morning that you physically sat in your local coffee shop and took the time to drink it out of an actual mug. (Before a few weeks ago, when I sat with Kerry on a bench outside of the Canteen sipping iced coffee out of a Mason jar, I can’t remember.) These days, Kerry is working to make that a daily occurrence.

By January 2019, Smith Canteen will no longer offer single-use plastic cups — an entire year before Starbucks plans to switch to (thicker) plastic sippy lids to avoid plastic straws in January 2020. It’s called the Green Canteen Project, and if there’s anyone who’s up for the challenge it’s Kerry.

I got the chance to chat with Kerry; we talked about her favorite Insta-bakers, America’s disposable culture, and why she’s not a big fan of routines.

Kitchen renovations are pricey! A recent Consumer Reports survey found that the mid-range kitchen remodel lands between $25,000 to $50,000. While that number may seem wild, it’s actually not that surprising when you look at all the elements involved, including cabinetry, countertops, appliances, and even less-expensive items like hardware (multiply that $5 knob by 30 and you’re getting into the hundreds even when you choose a cheaper option!).

So I’m always amazed by the people who, through sheer DIY skills or thrifty choices, manage to transform their kitchens for cheap. Kudos, you guys — you’re an inspiration to us all!

Here are five kitchen renovations that cost $5,000 or less.

My grandpa used to quote an old radio show all the time, one that debuted when he was a kid. “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!” he’d tell me, and I had no idea what he was talking about, but assumed that The Shadow somehow knew that my next-door neighbor had stolen a package of Big League Chew from a gas station.

The Shadow might also know what kind of internal torment made a woman dip a chicken tender into her soda while she sat in the stands at the U.S. Open tennis tournament. “Who does this?” one person wrote on Twitter, asking the first question that went through all of our minds. (The second question is “Which one is she trying to ruin: the tender or the Coke?”)

If you think that Catherine McCord, the blogger behind Weelicious, looks like she has it all together on Instagram, guess what? She has it all together in real life too. When she’s not feeding her family (kids Kenya, 11; Chloe, 9; and Gemma, 3) inventive smoothies and nutritious meals made with whole foods, she’s running her meal kit company, One Potato, which aims to make organic, family-friendly meals accessible for families across the country.

Whether you believe her or not, McCord swears that mealtimes can be easy — and after just a few minutes of talking to her, we got on board too.
