There is no better way to start the day than with a breakfast sandwich. Seriously, no one at the office is going to be jealous of your cereal bars and yogurt. However, everyone will be looking at you like a lottery winner if you walk in with that magical combo of egg, cheese, sausage or bacon, and a bun, bagel, or English muffin. Extra credit if your sandwich is homemade.

But even if you’ve assembled the elements just so, you still need to get your creation from here to there. No one will be drooling if you arrive at the office and it’s turned into (quite literally) a hot mess.

To prevent such a mishap, we turned to a sandwich pro for her step-by-step guide to wrapping the perfect breakfast sandwich.

No matter the season, there’s something totally satisfying about a hot breakfast — especially when it doesn’t require turning on the oven. As a recent casserole convert, I’m happy to tell you that this sausage-and-egg number is super satisfying, yet not so hearty that it needs to be reserved for cooler mornings.

This month we’ve been talking to cooks around the country about their favorite knives, and we’ve also asked them to share where and how they store them. As you might imagine, magnetic knife strips are a pretty popular solution, but these holders aren’t just for knives — they’re good for storing so much more, like bench scrapers and metal spatulas (see above).

Here are six ways you can use a magnetic knife rack around the kitchen.

Lean into fresh fig season while you can — it’s slow to arrive and quick to leave. If you’re lucky enough to live in a region where they are easy to come by, you likely already know this and are eating them by the handful. For the rest of us, where the arrival of figs means only displays of pints from California at the grocery store, we often don’t know the glories because frankly, those shipped containers just aren’t as good. But this recipe lets the rest of us play along, because it transforms even those subpar fresh figs into something wonderful.

Sunday afternoons are for meal prep and lunch-packing for the week ahead, but after dinner is made on Monday I take 10 minutes to do one tiny task that saves me time each morning. This task isn’t critical, but it’s just one more way to save time in the morning rush — can you guess what it is?

Every school year starts optimistically. Sure, it’s hard to wake up earlier, but if you’re anything like me, the start of a new routine is energizing. I return to meal planning, relish fixed hours to get work done, and even devote myself to beautiful packed lunches — for the kids and myself — that will make us all thrilled to eat well, even in the middle of a busy day.

But after a few weeks (or, uh, maybe just two of them), I find myself feeling overwhelmed by the thought of doing this all year long. As in, 180 times.

Sound familiar? That’s when I reach for store-bought shortcuts to help, and you should too.

If I’ve learned one thing about making breakfast sandwiches over the years, it’s that it’s always necessary to have a creamy element to bring the whole thing together. You can skip the eggs or meat or even the cheese (yes, I do really mean it), but a light spread of something will make that sandwich better. Take your breakfast sandwich game to a whole new level with these ideas for creamy toppings.

20 Cooks, 20 Knives: This month, we’re taking a close look at a chef’s most important tool: her knife. We asked 20 cooks, amateurs and professionals, to share their favorite knives and the stories behind them. While chef’s knives are featured prominently, no two are exactly alike, and there are also a few surprises.

Caden Whitmore

Age: 4
City: Minneapolis

Caden enjoys cooking and always jumps at the chance to help in the kitchen. Last year he received a set of plastic children’s knives as a Christmas gift. They’ve proven to be very useful, allowing Caden to easily and safely help chop vegetables and prepare meals. Thankfully his knives came in a set of three, so he can share with his older sister and younger brothers, if needed.
