It may seem too simple to be true, but getting and staying fit does not require a monumental effort, expensive gym memberships or special equipment. Your sleeping patterns could be slowing you down from achieving your fitness and body composition goals. Many of us have heard the 8-hour rule for sleep that deals with sleep quantity, but what about sleep quality? Optimizing sleep quality could be the missing key to getting leaner and boosting your energy and productivity.

We’re just over three weeks into 2019, which means that most of us haven’t completely abandoned our New Year’s resolutions yet. In addition to trying to cut down on my LaCroix intake (it’s not even that good, you guys) and trying to stop obsessing about mistakes I made in, like, 2004, I’m trying to really focus on – and stick to – my monthly budget this year.

Because I am SERIOUS-in-all-caps about this, I made an Excel spreadsheet to try to determine where every paycheck goes. Although most of my monthly bills are pretty consistent, my grocery receipts can fluctuate like crazy, depending on how well I’ve planned my meals in advance (spoiler alert: I am a poor planner) and whether or not I buy whatever impulse-in-a-box is currently being showcased on the end-cap. Fortunately, a not-quite-new but increasingly popular and free phone app can help me – or force me – to make a grocery list ahead of time, and it can also calculate which store has the best price on those items.

Everyone has their own weird food quirks. Much to the consternation of my entire family, for years I only ate vanilla ice cream with a drizzle of olive oil and a dash of sea salt because a men’s fitness magazine told me that it would cause me to eat less of it (it did not). My father used to eat scrambled eggs every morning with a heaping helping of ketchup and melted butter, which for some reason as a teen grossed me out to no end. And on Fridays (until the entire family begged her to stop), my mother used to smoke her own herring, knowing full well it’s already sold pre-smoked at the store. My siblings and I would climb into the car like clockwork and drive every Friday to wander the mall for two hours while she cooked, which gives you an idea of how strongly it smelled.

Still, in comparison to what you’ll see below, these are minor food sins.

I am usually the biggest proponent of eating as much ice cream as possible. At least in theory. But I think we can all agree that there are moments when a waffle cone stuffed with three heaping scoops leaves you feeling stuffed and a little sick. That’s why the idea behind Hold the Cone! Vanilla Mini Ice Cream Cones from Trader Joe’s is so ingenious: If you’re craving ice cream, but you don’t want to overdo it, a mini ice cream cone should be enough to satisfy your sweet tooth. And for $3 for a box of eight cones, they’re very well-priced.

The mini cones were recently dubbed the “best” dessert at Trader Joe’s, according to their loyal customers, so obviously I had to try them out for myself. Would they really satisfy my ice cream craving?

When I’m in a bad mood, I do one of two things: I either clean obsessively (I’m talking triple-vacuuming the rugs and dusting behind the appliances) or I get in the kitchen and make something (often while sipping a glass of wine). I’m going to chalk up the first to my German upbringing and I wouldn’t impose that on anyone, but I think the act of cooking is one of the most therapeutic things you can do. It can brighten your day — and your life! Here’s how.

It’s never been a better time to learn to live like decluttering expert Marie Kondo, the author of the New York Times bestseller The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up and star of Netflix’s new series, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo.

Since she’s just about everywhere these days — and we can’t get enough — we thought we’d put together a list of little-known (to some!) facts about her. Here goes.

Let’s be real: Scandinavian homes always seem impeccable. While it’s easy to chalk up their flawless interiors to hygge-inspired coziness and minimalist decor, we’re still itching to know what design lovers are doing differently on that side of the globe to make their homes appear so perfect.

To find out, we hit up two of our favorite Scandinavian design enthusiasts for help: Niki Brantmark, creator of My Scandinavian Home and author of “Lagom: The Swedish Art of Living a Balanced, Happy Life,” and Rebecca Thandi Norman, co-founder of Scandinavia Standard.

We asked them what exactly our northern friends are doing to make their homes look so immaculate, and they had lots of great tips to share.

The slow cooker is a mainstay of modern American cooking — but it’s not just you and me firing up the Crock-Pot on a weeknight. Famous chefs and celebrities are not above its charms, and this week we’re bringing you five recipes from five kitchen stars that show off their favorite ways to put the slow cooker to good use.

Hugh calls this Southern minestrone from his new cookbook, The Chef and the Slow Cooker, “a brothy celebration of all things vegetable,” and we have to agree. The star of this celebration? The humble butter bean — a legume that, when cooked properly, becomes nearly as creamy and smooth as its namesake. Butter beans are a staple of Southern food and, in fact, I can think of few things more Southern than a pot of butter beans simmering away on the stove all day long. Acheson captures that essence perfectly in this recipe, designed for the slow cooker rather than your grandma’s stockpot.
