I thought you might like to know how we’re getting on with our intermittent fasting (or 5:2 fast diet) that we started in June this year just before we went on our cycling trip along the Danube.Well, it’s going wonderfully! I’ve lost the 5 kilos I put back on after my initial diet three years ago when I lost 20 kilos, despite the fact that I am now eating a lot of foods I had thought I’d have to give up forever.I actually look forward to our fast days, when I have 500 calories and Jean Michel has 600, and which we plan according to what’s going on that week but which are usually 3 or 4 days apart. Mondays and Thursdays or Fridays are typical choices, but the beauty of the 5:2 fast is that there are no fixed days.  We continue to always eat the same thing on those days, as it suits us that way.The amazing thing is that I am not hungry on fast days

Heres an important word for your body to learn: Tabata. Its the name of a form of interval training that relies on a simple pattern of 20 seconds of exercise followed by 10 seconds of rest. That doesnt sound so bad, but once you repeat the cycle eight times a standard round of Tabata it can be enough to make you see stars.

Thank You From A Medical Provider Monday, November 18th, 2013 hello! This is a long winded thank you…I have to say I love listening to your podcasts, and thoroughly enjoythe candid banter!  I am a Physician Assistant/medical provider forthe Department of Defense, and let me tell you, I am dealing with allof the issues you discuss on your program on a daily, nearly hourlybasis.  I have been a paleo proponent for years, and was firstintroduced to the Zone about 15 years ago. I have been doing my ownexperiments with my “N of 1? on my diabetic patients and others withthe zone for a LONG time, and felt then like I was a pioneer and a lonewolf in the quest for eating to promote wellness and healing insteadof medicating lifestyle and pandering to modern medicine!

by Wootang01 Metabolic Resistance Training Made Easy For most people who want to lose weight their number one goal is to lose fat from around their tummy. Unfortunately though, it is often the case that people who find themselves in this position find that to lose fat from this area is easier said than done. You may be surprised to know that not all exercises are created equally and in some instances you could find yourself really getting stuck into a exercise routine only to find that the fat loss is not happening. Fortunately there is a form of exercise that is just right for this kind of fat loss and that is Metabolic Resistance Training.Metabolic Resistance Training is absolutely perfect for those people who wish to achieve fat loss and the great thing about it is that you don’t need to make any financial investment in order to get started. To explain Metabolic Resistance Training in more detail it is a good idea to look at a simple exercise such as brisk walking, whilst you are walking in this way you will be burning calories but as soon as you have stopped walking the calorie burning will also stop.Metabolic Resistance Training basically mixes up your training so that you are doing both aerobic and resistance training. When you exercise in this way you will find that your metabolism is boosted considerably and your body will carry on burning calories for up to 24 hours after you have finished exercising.

Intermittent fasting (also known as IF) involves eating very little or nothing for short periods throughout the week followed by a normal (healthy) diet the rest of the time. The theory, which has been tested in various scientific studies, is that fasting every now and then can help us lose weight, reduce the risk of certain diseases and even prolong our lifespan. While weight loss advice in recent years has been to eat little and often to ‘keep up the metabolism’, longer periods between eating may in fact be much more useful for weight loss and overall health. There are lots of different ways to go about intermittent fasting. Some diet programs allow you to eat a total of 4-500(for women)/5-600 (for men) calories during a fast day, some advocate a full 24 hours without a morsel of food passing your lips, and others allow a 6, 8 or 10 hour window in each 24 hours in which you can eat. Perhaps the most well-known is the 5:2 diet, first mentioned by Dr Michael Mosley in the 2012 documentary:‘Eat, Fast and Live Longer’.

Contemporary scientific evidence suggest that you have to pick the right type of (short intense) exercise if you don’t want your beta alanine supplement to end up as another “false starter” in your closet. In the past couple of weeks beta alanine (BA) has gotten some bad press, here at the SuppVersity. While some conspiracy theorists may already have smelled a personal vendetta of a sodium bicarbonate advocate like myself against its ‘high tech competitor’, the actual reason for the negative, or at least not necessarily exciting news is the exercise specificity of beta alanine (BA) supplementation. The most recent BA study from the University of Bern and the Swiss Federal Institute of Sport in Switzerland and the Karolinska University Hospital in Sweden is yet another rather disappointing BA study to support my previous assertion that the benefits for the average gymrat are largely overblown. What did the researchers do As Gross et al. point out, the aim of their two-part intervention study was to alter the physiological systems discussed above in ways that could improve severe exercise performance

Todays workout: A total body tabata workout! Instead of my usually 20:10, I upped it to 30:10 (30 seconds of exercise, 10 seconds rest). I did 5 rounds, which was 16:40 minute workout, but you can do 3-5 or heck, any number of rounds you want to do! Here’s a short video on the workout and how to do all the exercises:After this workout I also did an assisted pull-up pyramid (1-2-3-4-5-6-5-4-3-2-1), alternating 20 crunches and 20 reverse crunches in between the sets.
