They don't make butt kickin' TV shows like Kung Fu anymore. The cool thing about growing up in the 70's and 80's was that everyone watched the same TV shows. Heck, we only had 3 main channels, a public channel, and one or two local channels back then. It sounds strange, but I kind of miss that. When we wasted time, we all wound up watching the same TV shows. The bummer was that most houses only had one TV set. I grew up with two sisters and we made TV show deals. They would let me watch old episodes of "Batman", "Kung Fu" and "Planet of the Apes" movies, if they could watch "Little House on the Prairie" and "Donnie and Marie" (brutal). My dad liked to watch "Lawrence Welk" (even more brutal). Anyway, this post really isn't about TV. "It is about patience in getting six pack abs, […]

I’ve come almost full circle on my opinion of needing social support for weight loss.
Personally I don’t want (or like) social support.
Because my diet is my business.
It creeps me out that people feel the need to discuss how I eat or what I eat.
One of the things I like the most about Eat Stop Eat is that it’s private.
I eat when I want, and I don’t eat when it fits my schedule.
This is what works for me…and it works really well.

(I’ve been at my ‘goal weight’ for almost 4 years straight.)
Now, for some people, social support is important
Having all of your friends and family, and coworkers and Facebook friends and twitter buddies knowing that you are trying lose weight… some people may need this.
But for others, (like me)… I enjoy knowing what works for me, and while I enjoy the support, I have found that support and lecturing are pretty […]

Michelle Obama and her war against childhood obesity is in the news again.
In the article that she has written an article for this week’s edition of Newsweek, the First Lady outlines her plan to transform America’s youth from fat to fit within the span of a single generation.
Here is a link to the article.
Why I Am Fighting Childhood Obesity
We can solve this problem in one generation
.
And while I personally believe that big social programs such as these are more effective at spending money than affecting any sort of meaningful change, I want to know what you think.
And I made it easy with this handy-dandy Poll Daddy poll.
So, make your selection and then send send this link to all of your Facebook friends, Twitter followers, etc…

Nuts have gotten a surprising amount of flack as of late. Many nuts have a fairly high PUFA content, and most of that PUFA is Omega-6, which is the bad one. It’s easily oxidized, highly unstable for cooking, usually rancid on the shelf, and, thanks to government farm subsidies and public hysteria over animal fat, it’s in absolutely everything nowadays. We Primal types generally avoid it for good reason, and that tends to influence how we react to the O6 content of nuts. Last week I received this email from a reader:
Dear Mark,
I’m a little confused. I get the animal fat, the meat, the veggies, and the lowish sugar fruit recommendations, but what about nuts? I love nuts, don’t get me wrong… I’m just a bit paranoid about the Omega 6 content. You recommend nuts in the book. If you (and pretty much all other Primal bloggers) tell us to […]

I arrived home from my family trip to see my newly finished kitchen floor.
It was beautiful.

I remember thinking to myself..I’m finally getting this fixer-upper to somewhere approaching respectability.
I wasn’t planning on doing the floor, but the old tiles were splintering, and with Ro Wilder crawling, they were becoming a safety hazard.
So I felt really good that everything was finished and was done really well.
Of course that was Friday Night…And this is Sunday Morning.
And this Morning this was the scene in my basement:

I’ll spare you the picture of the pool of water on the ground, but needless to say, I’m not a happy camper.
I’m also not fasting.
I WAS fasting..
In fact when I found the pool in the basement I was about 17 hours into a fast
By 20 hours into my fast I was eating.
Why?
Simple: Stress….horrible, illogical stress.
Eating will not change the fact that water seems to be flowing from somewhere (I’m […]

“…in physique development and sports performance, even rather intelligent folks can be resistant to removing any one element of the puzzle when they are currently pleased with the results being produced and see things consistently moving in the desired direction over time. Are there any practical ways to help such people break the “perception is reality” mindset where they would otherwise embrace evidence to the contrary that may be presented but are please with their results to the point of wanting to stick to the current recipe or rotation of recipes “as is”?”
Part of a comment on Alan Aragon’s recent post. The quote raises an interesting point in regards to how some people think about supplementation. Which is, despite being aware of the lack of any evidence of efficacy of the supplement in question, they continue taking it once they started.
Among some people there is an almost superstitious fear involved […]

Regardless of any opinions we might have about the Mediterranean Diet, this stuffed pork loin with a Mediterranean flair is right up our alley. The recipe for Mediterranean stuffing, made from red peppers, spinach, olives, garlic, nuts and an optional sprinkle of feta cheese (we couldn’t resist throwing some in), was sent in by Jade Kendall for the Primal Cookbook Challenge.
A pork loin is a fine cut of meat, tender and easy to cook, but because it’s the leanest cut of pork it also tends to be the least flavorful. This is where Jane steps in with a perfect solution: stuffing. Breadcrumbs are nowhere to be found in her rich and flavorful filling that evokes the best of Mediterranean cooking. Her ingredients add fat (nuts), flavor (garlic) and smart fuel (spinach).

Red pepper is no slouch in the nutrient department either, and adds bright color that matches the bright, bold flavor […]

The basis of Tabata Training is 4 minutes of intense interval training/circuit training. What you are doing is taking an exercise we'll use sprints as an example here.
Sprint as hard as you can for 20 seconds
Walk for 10 seconds
Repeat 7 more times for a total of 8 sets.
So what you have is a total of 4 minutes workout time.
Tabata Training can be done with a number of different exercises the idea is to use an exercise that gets the whole body involved or at least the major muscle groups.Tabata Training can be done with Barbells, Dumbells, Kettlebells or just Bodyweight exercises. I'll give you some other exercises and routines to try in a minute but first let me give you some background and how Tabatas work.
Tabata Training was developed by Izumi Tabata (imagine that) at the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Tokyo, Japan. They did a study on […]

Paddy’s Paleo Beef Stew

Next week is St. Paddy’s Day so all week on my site I’ve been featuring a bunch of healthy Irish recipes. Continuing on with my Irish recipe round up…..Yep, it’s another Irish beef stew. I can’t help it–it’s in my DNA!
You’re probably familiar with my Beef & Guinness version and you may remember I made an Autumn Stew this past year. What’s the difference besides the obvious use of Guinness? Subtle differences like using more types of root veg, pearl onions and no potatoes in the stew itself (making it a perfect St. Paddy’s Paleo dish) are the main differences, which goes to show that you can take the same idea and make it different and seasonal.

Warner Dashiell

Warner Dashiell has been good friends with Morrison since high school. So when Warner was looking for a place to get in shape, what better place than his friends gym, KnuckleUp?
Warner and his wife, Dusty, both joined up to get a little more fit. Warner is in the Kickboxing class, and Dusty started the Fitness Boot Camp. Warner was surprised at the intensity of the class. He was expecting something easier, but he enjoyed meeting the challenge. Warner usually attends two or three times a week, but wants to get it up to four times a week. Warner really enjoys going, but his long hours at work means sometimes he misses class.
You would think that Warner’s job with one of the premiere Outer Banks pool builders, GulfStream Pools and Spas, would be hard enough. Warner has over 12 years of experience servicing and installing swimming pools and […]
