Occam’s Razor

Occam’s razor is a principle named after the 14th-century logician, theologian and Franciscan friar, William of Ockham. In short terms, it means that you shouldn’t make your hypotheses more complex than they need to be. The simplest explanation or strategy is often the right one. Sadly, it’s rarely applied in the fitness industry or among people in general. We have a tendency to seek out exotic and alternative hypotheses when an explanation for a phenomenon appears too straight-forward.
If the truth is non-complex and fairly unexciting, invent new truths – make them complex and exciting. It’s an effective way to get attention and it’s a strategy employed by charlatans and quacks since the beginning of time. Spice up your claims with half-truths, credentials, maybe add some charisma to the mix, and you’ll soon have a following of people that are all too eager to buy into the lies.
Some of the […]

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

Yesterday I shared the desire to “look good naked” among my reasons for living Primally. A few readers seconded the logic. Though the point was in good fun, it wasn’t in jest. At 56 and counting, I happily take pride in my appearance. Although there’s a lot more to my life and self-confidence than appearance, I enjoy looking as dynamic as I feel. Although some might see the sentiment as vain, I’ll wholeheartedly stand by it. Although some might cry vanity at any focus on appearance (like my top ten admission), the wordsmiths say it’s more accurately “excessive pride” in one’s looks. But then, is one person’s perception of “excessive” the same as another’s? Is it a matter of kind, degree, or aim? We might balk at someone’s attention to perfect clothes or hair, but what about the same dedication to a great body?

Here in our MDA corner, we tend […]

In Part 1 of this series, I outlined the basics of my Health Habits Diet

A modified Paleo Diet will make up the majority of your meals
Specific peri-workout nutrition will help improve your workouts and boosts your metabolism
Modifications in your nighttime eating are geared to your specific weight loss goals
And sadly, portion control still plays an important role for HH dieters.

I also introduced you to 4 different types of Health Habits dieters

People concerned with rapid weight loss with no concern for fitness (strength, endurance, etc)
People who want to improve their overall health
People who want to get fit but aren’t concerned about losing weight
People who want to get fat and burn fat at the same time

Note:
I hate how most diet books are “one size fits all”. While a general Paleo-style diet will go a long way to improving the health of most people, it isn’t perfect. Some of us are blessed with […]

Hittin' the HIIT | The Great Balancing Act

There’s been a lot more talk in the mainstream recently about “caveman” diets and barefoot training. Primal/Paleo/Evo seems to be gaining in popularity and may be nearing the critical mass needed to garner mainstream appreciation. John Durant appeared on Stephen Colbert last week, Art De Vany was featured in Der Spiegel, Born to Run is a NYT Bestseller and my book recently made the top ten Health and Fitness titles on Amazon. Even so, we Primal types still get those occasional looks of derision or incomprehension when we show up at the gym with our Fives on and a bag of homemade jerky hanging off our belt to do a quick 15 minute HIIT session. I think there’s a sense among outsiders that the Grok fairy tale trumps the science within the Primal crowd – that the notion of living like a caveman is a cute ideal but irrelevant in […]

Weight Loss Spam

This was the latest spam left on my website, my comments in RED.
Hello
I am new to this spot. I found loads of useful information here. I would also like to contribute some thing for this community. I would like to share some quick weight loss tips. If you wish to know how to lose 10 pounds in a week, you are likely not searching for a common dieting and exercise plan. You can lose weight with a basic diet and work out plan, Still this demands a lot of time doing intense cardio workouts and adhering a strict diet. Here I will draft the exact steps that I took to lose 10 pounds in just a week.
1. Stay away from all fried foods for the week (Sounds logical to me)
2. Drink In an 8oz glass of grapefruit with breakfast each day. (this speeds up your metabolism) (FAIL on the metabolism […]

Dear Mark: I Hate Running

Hey Mark,
I’m in the Army National Guard. I would really like to follow your workout guidelines, especially with regard to cardio (I actually hate running and I’m not very good at long distance), but with regard to the Army Physical Fitness test, which I have to pass, I have to run 2 miles in a set amount of time, less than 16 minutes essentially. I feel like the only way I can maintain this is to do sustained running sessions about 3 times a week for about 20 minutes a shot (Again, I hate running, haha). Do you think if I follow all of the workout advice in the Primal Blueprint, I can still pass this test?

Great question, and I’m glad you asked. The endurance training question presents a conundrum that plagues many of my readers, I’m sure, no matter how often I sound the drum against Chronic Cardio. […]

Just a quick ramble to start your week.
The following is a basic tenant of Taoism:
Things in their original simplicity contain their own natural power, power that can be spoiled when that simplicity is changed.

This principle seems to hold true in today’s world, where we seem to live a daily struggle of trying to force the square peg into the round hole.
Whether it’s food, your workout, or the people in your life, it’s good to always keep this principle in the back of your mind.
Now, the most obvious NUTRITION application/interpretation of this principle is that “natural unprocessed foods are best”. But, if we take it a step further, we also see the application/interpretation that we should not FORCE nutrition, and that ‘original simplicity’ can also be the foods that you like eating.
After all, forcing yourself to eat unprocessed, organic, raw foods all the time doesn’t really fit into the concept […]
