Getty ImagesIf I had a nickel for every time a female client told me they didn’t want to lift weights for fear of “getting bulky,” let’s just say I would have lots of nickels. While, yes, there is a purpose for dieting and cardio, the truth is that lean muscle cannot survive on the treadmill alone. In my experience, weight training still seems to be the biggest-kept secret for fat loss. You should know that unless you’re taking supplements to enhance muscle growth you won’t get bulky, because your body simply doesn’t have the hormones to get there naturally. Cardio only burns calories while you’re performing it, but strength training has what is known as the afterburn effect.

I enjoy the feeling of a muscle pump and I don’t get that from crunches and leg raises. However, I’ve made it my goal to train abs 2-3x per week. Funny thing is, when I was in high school, I did ab exercises daily and had no visible abdominal definition; these days, I do 10 crunches per week and have more noticeable abs.

by Aaron Hewitt PA-C, Physician Assistant OrthoCarolina’s Sports Medicine CenterYou’ve likely heard of high-intensity interval training (HIIT), a type of workout that isn’t totally new, but is increasingly popular and can be confusing because there are so many types.Usually short in duration, the HIIT intervals incorporate intense periods of work followed by low-intensity segments or rest, increasing both your aerobic and anaerobic capacity. Whether it’s CrossFit, P90X, Insanity, Tabata training, Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred or any other variation, these workouts can seem intimidating or downright scary if you’ve never tried one. Can I physically do the exercises and keep up with everyone?

Photo Credit: Foundation CrossFitHIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) for Beginners: First of all, what is High Intensity Interval Training? It is a workout method that alternates maximum effort “work” intervals with low-intensity “rest” intervals. You can structure almost any activity into a HIIT workout, including running, cycling, swimming, rowing, walking, bodyweight movements, and even weightlifting. What are the Benefits of HIIT? HIIT is more effective than steady-state cardio for weight loss. HIIT induces the “afterburn effect” post-workout, meaning that you continue to burn calories from your workout up to a few hours after you are done. HIIT trains your body for explosive power, helping you jump higher, sprint faster, and be overall more agile.

For even more great, FREE material, sign-up for BBA updates here ————————->I’ve been meaning to write about Intermittent Fasting (IF) for a while now, but just haven’t gotten around to it, but since it has quickly become a favorite way of eating for many people and myself, I figured I had to set some time aside to knock this one out. I’ve been following IF protocols on and off for about 2-years now, and definitely like some aspects of IF. Basically IF is extending the window (fast) in which you do not eat. Most people eat throughout the day, and typically stop eating around 7-8pm and start eating again the next day between 6-8am. So the typical fast for people is around 10-12 hours each day.

No, that’s not a typo: “HIIT” is an acronym that stands for High Intensity Interval Training, and it seems to be one of the hottest trends in fitness. Indeed, HIIT made the top of the list in the American College of Sports Medicine’s annual survey of fitness trends. You may have heard of HIIT as the “newest,” “best,” “most amazingest,” “magic-est” way to lose weight or achieve some other goal. Is it? Well, yes and no.HIIT is basically just a new trendy acronym for a form of training people have been doing for a long, long time. Most of the time, however, the only people doing it were competitive athletes trying to run, bike, and/or swim faster in races

Home > The X Factor > X Factor 2013: Sam Bailey’s weight loss is thanks to Tabata training & healthy eating!November 3rd, 2013 by Lynn Connolly.During last night’s X Factor, viewers heard the fabulous Sam Bailey revealing that she’s lost over a stone in weight since she moved into the finalists’ house, and it certainly showed as she performed wearing a body-hugging jumpsuit…Judges Gary Barlow and Nicole Scherzinger both made reference to Sam’s slimmed-down look, which she’s apparently achieved using a method of training called Tabata and by eating a healthy diet.It seems that Sam became determined to shed the weight after worrying that her ‘mumsy’ image could see her do less well in the contest – she told us a few weeks ago that she didn’t even expect to get through to Boot Camp because of her appearance – than the younger and slimmer hopefuls. Her trainer Tom Mangan, who works in the gym at the Hilton Hotel in Leicester, has been telling the Sunday Mirror about the workout he planned for Sam.He said, “Sam first came down at the time when she was at the judge’s houses…“Then when she moved in to the X-Factor house, I designed a programme for her which she could do without any equipment.“She has found a little space in the house and does body weight exercises every night which are short and sharp.“She does a work-out called Tabata training which is a high intensity 4- minute session and is the quickest way to lose fat.“You can do three to four rounds to form a twenty minute work-out. But she is struggling to fit it in as she’s so busy.”He added, “It’s a whole life change for Sam…“The primary aim is to lose weight and secondary to that is to tone up.“Since the first audition she has already lost a stone and a half. She is doing great and half-way through her target.“If you want to be a popstar then you have to look the part as well and for the best chance in the show you have to have it all.“She wants to get back to the shape she used to be when she was younger and first met her husband.“There are no real fitness goals – she just wants to look better and she herself looking good on stage. She knows that she needs to lose weight to make it as a popstar.“She has had a bit of stick about her weight and it’s something she’s quite conscious about.”The paper adds, “Sam has been alternating this with celebrity trainer Jon Trevor’s ‘red carpet ready’ work-out and a diet plan.”Jon said, “Sam has a specific eating plan and is eating non starchy carbohydrates – such as green and leafy vegetables and salads – and low saturated fat like fish, lean meats and egg white omelettes.“She does a work-out before breakfast and another work-out in the afternoon before evening meals”On Thursday, Sam took to Twitter to say, “Want to say a massive thankyou to @tmangan17 from livingwell Leicester and @JonTrevor for all their support and advice in my weightloss xxx”Well it’s clearly working for her – she looks fantastic doesn’t she?!Here’s a reminder of her performance last night, which, given it was of hit track Enough Is Enough, may well have been aimed at the pies in her life…Related: Sam Bailey, X Factor 2013
