Fasting. Not sure how that word originated as there is nothing fast about a fast. Or, I would imagine so, as I have never participated in one. Yes, I would think fasting would go by S L O W L Y. Yes, ever so slowly.Imaginative hunger pangs, languid pace, energy dips and all, I am intrigued.

When I first looked at IF, I came across several blogs which, whilst extolling the virtues of IF, also emphasised strength training – specifically weightlifting:http://www.leangains.com/ Martin Berkham – IF and weight-liftinghttp://www.marksdailyapple.com/welcome-to-marks-daily-apple/#axzz2pS7TUoOH Mark Sisson – The Primal Blueprinthttp://www.eatstopeat.com/ Brad Pilon – blogging on IF since 2006http://gettingstronger.org/ Todd Becker and Hormesis(All these blogs are well worth perusing – they contain a wealth of info, most of it freely offered.)I did nothing about this, rationalising that these blogs reflected the particular interests of the blogger. However, I’ve now been practicing IF for almost 2 years, and I’ve recently added strength building exercises to that regime – inspired, it has to be said, by the womenfolk on the Mumsnet 5:2 threads. Here’s my programme so far:Back exercises: I had a problem with my back, many years ago, so, since then I’ve been doing two daily exercises to prevent a recurrence:I lie on my back on the floor with my knees bent and do 100 curls while keeping my lower back on the floor – arms out in frontAnd then I do the reverse – I lie on my front and bring my head and shoulders up whilst keeping my hips on the floor. Up until I retired – over 20 years ago, now – I cycled to work, in summer reaching about 120 miles a week – so I was pretty fit. I joined a gym for a few years – mainly treadmill and cross-trainer. Then I gained access to a small swimming pool – I spend about 30 minutes a day in there

Happy Holidays Lovey!I didn’t sleep well last night and I think it was because I wasn’t in my own bed (I was awake for about 3 hours in the middle of the night)… but anyways all day I’ve been pretty lethargic and lacking in energy. My goal over the holidays is to stick to my workout schedule and try to make the healthiest choices possible when it comes to what I’m eating and drinking.

Happy Saturday! This past week I visited San Diego for the first time, and it is a beautiful city! While I was there, I met up with some of our San Diego FitFam, and we had an awesome time talking about body alignment, health, nutrition and fitness – and we got in a great body weight circuit!I post a lot of body weight workouts, and people always ask me if it’s as effective as weight training. I think there’s a perception that body weight workouts aren’t as hard as weight training, or won’t allow you to build muscle and strength. There’s a perception that without going to the gym, or without some complicated program, getting that really shredded body just won’t happen. But that’s just not true – fitness doesn’t have to be complicated.

Lets face it you want to lose weight, look good, be healthy? all diets are the same in their goal and all do the same thing with their different approaches. You need to reach a caloric deficit if you want to lose, period.Your body needs a certain amount of calories in order to maintain its current state depending on your level of activity. Based on your age, height, and activity level. So basically you are what you eat more or less. Before we go into food, lets look at two ways you can achieve a caloric deficit.Cardio:Cardio works because you achieve a deficit by expending calories, and yes it does have it’s uses.

I thought you might like to know how we’re getting on with our intermittent fasting (or 5:2 fast diet) that we started in June this year just before we went on our cycling trip along the Danube.Well, it’s going wonderfully! I’ve lost the 5 kilos I put back on after my initial diet three years ago when I lost 20 kilos, despite the fact that I am now eating a lot of foods I had thought I’d have to give up forever.I actually look forward to our fast days, when I have 500 calories and Jean Michel has 600, and which we plan according to what’s going on that week but which are usually 3 or 4 days apart. Mondays and Thursdays or Fridays are typical choices, but the beauty of the 5:2 fast is that there are no fixed days.  We continue to always eat the same thing on those days, as it suits us that way.The amazing thing is that I am not hungry on fast days

Mention fasting to a bodybuilder, physique competitor or high level athlete, and you’ll probably be greeted with howls of derision. For so long, the idea that eating small, regular meals is far superior for building muscle, losing fat, providing energy and optimizing performance has been prominent in the world of fitness and nutrition.Fasting appears to be counterproductive to just about every goal you could have. You need calories, protein and carbs to build muscle, so how can fasting help with that?Sure, fasting may help cut calories, but what about your metabolism? That slows down when you don’t eat, doesn’t it?And for performance – there must be a reason why pro sportsmen and women are always sipping energy drinks, taking bites from bars and conduct post match interviews while downing their team-sponsored protein and carb shakes. Plus, you’ve probably had some pretty sucky workouts in the past when you’ve not eaten beforehand. It seems that regular eating and performing and looking your best generally go hand in hand. But then again, many cultures are based around fasting, and while this might be for religious reasons, it doesn’t seem to do them any harm. You also have the fact that fasting clearly helps curtail your calorie intake, which can only be a good thing for weight loss.Maybe it’s not so clear cut after all
