Call it Intermittent Fasting (IF), alternate day fasting, 5:2 Diet, 4:3 Diet, 18-hour Diet, Every Other Day Diet, Fast Diet or Starvation Diet, but going without food for a period of time each week continues to gain attention in the scientific community. Classic animal studies linking calorie restriction to longevity have suggested protection against obesity, type 2 diabetes, inflammation, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and reduced metabolic risk factors associated with cancer while improving markers of cardiovascular aging (1). Long-term daily caloric restriction is difficult to maintain in humans as it often induces weight re-gain and non-compliance.

By the strictest of definitions a calorie deficit means ‘any amount of calories that falls short of the amount of calories needed to fuel the energy needs of your body’. Or, put another way: A calorie deficit is any amount of calories that is unable to maintain a persons body mass.A calorie deficit is ANY amount of food that results in loss of body mass.By this definition you cannot be in a deficit if you are not losing body mass. You can be eating less, a little, not much, and not lose body mass since these are all subjective descriptions of an amount of food, but if you are eating less food than is required to provide the energy you need to power your daily activities then a loss of mass must occur. The loss may be small, barely noticeable except by the most advanced of scientific equipment, but it needs to be there.. and if it is there, then you were eating less calories than you needed. It does not matter if you were eating 700 calories or 7,00 Calories of some special super-scientific diet… If a loss of body mass occurred you were in a deficit, if it didn’t then you were not in a deficit. This is where experts and gurus prey on people – by playing with the meanings of words.  A deficit is NOT a number less than what a calculator told you to eat

Serious discussion about calorie restriction and intermittent fasting in the popular press is comparatively rare – anything that involves changes of diet will quickly be buried by idiocy as a general rule, if not by the author of the piece, then shortly thereafter. Dieting is just one of those topics in which rationality seems to flee the building whenever it comes up.Both calorie restriction and intermittent fasting are shown to extend life and greatly improve health in mice and many other species, but they might not operate through exactly the same mechanisms. Intermittent fasting in which calorie intake is maintained at the same level as non-fasting rodents has been shown to produce some extension of life and health benefits in studies for example – equally other studies suggest that this might not be the case. For my money I’d wager the bulk of the effect is calorie based: intermittent fasting tends to result in a lower overall calorie intake, and we know that calorie intake has a large effect on health and longevity in comparison to everything else that you can try in mice. There is a lot more research into calorie restriction than exists for intermittent fasting strategies such as alternate day fasting. You should bear that in mind when reading around the topic.

Meat Leads to Inflammation? Thursday, December 26th, 2013 Written by: Kevin Cann             Here we go again.  Another study was just published that showed how dangerous and deadly eating meat is.  This research study came out of Harvard University and we all know how wicked smaht they are.  But before you replace your grass-fed burger with tofu, let us take a look at this research study.            For those of you who have not seen this study, the abstract is here, http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/nature12820.html and there was a write-up done by NPR here, http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2013/12/10/250007042/chowing-down-on-meat-and-dairy-alters-gut-bacteria-a-lot-and-quickly?sc=tw&cc=share.  In a nutshell the researchers were looking at the gut microbiome and how it responds to two different diets; an all animal based diet and an all plant based diet.  The study concluded with the researcher stating the following:“Finally, increases in the abundance and activity of Bilophila wadsworthia on the animal-based diet support a link between dietary fat, bile acids and the outgrowth of microorganisms capable of triggering inflammatory bowel disease. In concert, these results demonstrate that the gut microbiome can rapidly respond to altered diet, potentially facilitating the diversity of human dietary lifestyles.”In other words the researchers concluded that an animal based diet increases a microbe that causes inflammation.  Before we go any further let us look at this animal based diet.  One of the researchers, Lawrence David, stated that “Breakfast was eggs and bacon.  Lunch was ribs and brisket, and then for dinner, it was salami and prosciutto with an assortment of cheeses.  The volunteers had pork rinds for snacks.”  This looks very similar to the Paleo diet that Dr.

Episode 68 – featuring guest: Mat Lalonde (aka The Kraken)Download Episode HereDownload a transcript of Episode 68Show Topics:Re-address Blog Comment from Jon from Podcast 57 Insulin Resistance / Cod Liver Oil / PWO Carbohydrate Hashimoto’s Disease Best Diet to Gain Mass Matt’s Daily Food Intake Detailed Questions:1. Re-address Blog Comment from Jon from Podcast 57:I think a discussion on what the re-introduction of foods and the subsequent reactions to them means and why would be very interesting as a podcast topic. The paleo concept has expanded a lot from the original ‘cavemen did this so you should to’ logic of guys like cordain (another thing mentioned recently on the show, how robb has become more science orientated because of matt lalonde), but I still think at times robb reverts back to the ‘re- introduce it and see how you feel’ logical fallacy too often, because I bet almost any food completely eliminated for 30 days and then re-introduced would have negative effects and may take a few months to re-sensitive yourself to, so a talk on why this matters (scientifically preferable rather than anecdotally) would be important.

I’ve noticed a lot of information popping up about saturated fat, including its role in modulating Testosterone levels in men. Of course, the minute you say that saturated fats may increase testosterone most people say ‘and give you a heart attack’.Saturated fat can quickly divide people into being either pro (sat fat is super awesome) or con (sat fat will kill you). One thing I feel is really important to point out is that there is no such thing as ‘saturated fat’. There are saturated fats – more than two dozen different types of saturated fats exist, and while not ALL of them are present in high qualities in the typical average persons diet, the fact remains – they are all different. And while I don’t want to dive into the fat and testosterone research yet (I’m still working on it) I do want to make sure that people understand that there is no such thing as ‘saturated fat’I’ve asked Kurtis Frank and Dr.

There has been a lot of commotion lately about Tabata training. Everyone in the fitness industry is using it. It’s based on the research of Izumi Tabata and his colleagues at the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Japan. The protocol they used, which was based on the training that Japanese speed skaters were doing on the ice, included 7 to 8 x 20-second sprints on a stationary bicycle (about 170% of VO2max) with just 10 seconds recovery 5 days per week for 6 weeks. That’s a tough 6 weeks

I’m new to the idea of intermittent fasting so I’m not sure of all the “rules” but I have been looking at eating only in the morning hours (Buddha says that’s the proper time to take food) and fasting from noon until the following sunrise regularly. This is a practice in line with the 8 Mayahana Precepts and the 8 Uposatha Day precepts of the Theravadin tradition. Monks and nuns are only supposed to eat during the morning hours as well. From my understanding, intermittent fasting typically involves a 5:2 — five days on eating, 2 periods of 24 hours off. Search it on Amazon and you’ll find plenty of books on the subject.
