Save2Favorite1 This Tabata workout is a fitness cram session! In 30 minutes you work your entire body and then some. To make the workout even more efficient, we borrow a trick from Chicago-based trainer Lauren Fairbanks and turn the rest period into isometric exercises, which she lovingly calls “frest” for fake rest. Holding these positions works the muscles in a complementary way after the intensity of interval work.

When life gets busy and chaotic, it can be easy to blow off your workout. But, there are ways to get in an effective gym session without slaving away on a treadmill for hours.  We teamed up with Sean Armstead, owner of Phenomenal Fitness, for advice on how to get the most out of your workout.Sean suggests coming to the gym with a game plan. He suggests prioritizing your exercises and getting the “hard stuff” out of the way.“Whatever is the most difficult or requires the most focus and concentration should be done early on before you lose quality of movement or focus due to fatigue,” he says.Sean is also a big fan of tabata training. Tabata is high intensity conditioning where you do 20 seconds of hard work, followed by 10 seconds of rest.

Surrender bro, women are tougher than we’ll ever be… and let’s not talk about the other tactics by the means of which they trick us into doing whatever they want without us even noticing 😮 In the world of search engines for scientific papers on training and exercise science the acronym “HIIT” is currently what the word “sex” has always been on Google & co. Against that background it is actually surprising that no one else but me has taken notice of a paper on the “Sex specific responses to self-paced, high-intensity interval training with variable recovery periods”.

By Andrew Heffernan / June 2013: Discover Something WonderfulWhen it comes to cardio exercise, most gym-goers are either hares or tortoises: They like their workouts fast and furious or they like them slow and leisurely. Hares love the intensity of going full out; tortoises relish the relaxed groove of a meditative pace. Both types of exercise have proven benefits. Problems can arise, however, when you stick too closely to one type of workout or the other. That’s because your body runs on three separate but interrelated metabolic engines: the aerobic, the glycolytic and the ATP-CP systems. (For more on these systems, see ELmag.com/energysystems.) Each is built to power you through a different type of exercise.Slow and steady long-distance exercise uses primarily the “aerobic” system.
