Share I don’t know about you, but I can’t stand the low-rent fitness schlock that keeps clogging up the Internet. What you get is a cheeky headline and a re-hash of yesterday’s news, optimized for page views, retweets and an indiscriminate Facebook crowd.Remember when people actually wrote articles and shared their real thoughts, their own ideas and their actual experiences? That time is long gone. Personally, I don’t think anyone should be wasting their time in the fitnessphere. You will not find ‘7 Surprising Secrets to Fat Burning’ or ‘Top 13 Back Exercises’ in this oozing pit of attention starved bullshittery, so please stop looking, unless you want to be dragged down with the rest of them.Suffice to say, I’m not really keen on the writing scene around here – but every now and then, I come across something that might be worth your while.

Todays workout: A total body tabata workout! Instead of my usually 20:10, I upped it to 30:10 (30 seconds of exercise, 10 seconds rest). I did 5 rounds, which was 16:40 minute workout, but you can do 3-5 or heck, any number of rounds you want to do! Here’s a short video on the workout and how to do all the exercises:After this workout I also did an assisted pull-up pyramid (1-2-3-4-5-6-5-4-3-2-1), alternating 20 crunches and 20 reverse crunches in between the sets.

GD writes: “I have just heard of the Tabata form of exercise. Does it have any element of New age to it?  From what I read of it, it seems ok.  I would appreciate it if you could shed more light on it.”Dr. Izumi TabataTabata Training is not New Age and is a very serious and well-researched form of exercise.Designed by Dr Izumi Tabata of Japan, this training protocol involves 20 seconds of all-out effort, 10 seconds of rest, repeated eight times, in the course of about four minutes. He monitored the Japanese speed skating team in the 1990s and noticed that short spurts of extreme exercise was just as effective as hours of traditional training. This led to the development of Tabata training. Some of the exercises used during Tabata training include pushups, body weight squats, medicine ball slams, and sprinting or jumping rope.

Remember how I wrote about my love for strength training? I almost love HIIT just as much. If you are unfamiliar with HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training), there’s a great article here about it’s benefits. This month, during the Whole30, I’ve been trying to focus on getting consistent with my workouts as well as my eating. I thought I had it dialed in pretty well, but after listening to a podcast the other day I made a few tweaks to my training plan.

Q&A: Rest Between Exercises Written on March 29, 2013 in Exercise, Q&AHello there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to our email list for free updates on this topic! Question:How long should I rest between exercises?Answer:It depends on your goals and your current level of conditioning. If you’re just starting out I recommend resting just long enough after an exercise to not feel winded when starting the next. Depending on your condition you may not feel winded at all, especially since your focus during the first few weeks should be on learning and practicing proper form rather than training intensely. However, as you become more skilled, learn to train more intensely, and gradually use more resistance you will start to experience a greater metabolic and cardiovascular demand, especially during compound exercises involving large muscle groups. At this point, if you are only concerned with increasing muscular strength and size it probably makes little difference whether you rest a few minutes between exercises or rush from one to the next.
