I have a 6-year-old and a 3-year-old who come home from school every day begging for snacks, no matter how hearty a lunch I pack for them. The challenge is that I don’t want to spoil their dinner appetite with a sweet treat, but I also want to give them something to fuel their afternoon play time.

We recently moved our family from an apartment to a house. With a yard! And a deck! And a place for a grill! A grill, as you probably know, is a big purchase. A good-sized grill can cost a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. So we asked around and eventually settled on getting the same one my husband’s parents have — hey, it works great for them! (In case you’re wondering, it’s the Weber Spirit E-310.)

While it seemed pretty pricey to us ($449!), we knew that we’d be using it all the time. And then we put just a little more money into the deal, and it was the smartest thing we did: We paid for the grill to be assembled and delivered.

Before the Victoria sponge, British sponge cakes were leavened only by eggs hand-whisked with sugar until foamy and thick. Sometime in the mid-1800s, an unheralded genius realized that the recent invention of baking powder meant butter could be creamed in with the sugar, resulting in a firmer, longer-lasting, less temperamental sponge.

And that’s how we ended up with cake we know today: a toothsome, bouncy sponge that is comparatively easy to whip up and has a rich, buttery flavor. And Queen Victoria, an afternoon tea aficionado, was apparently particularly fond of it.

It’s interesting to notice that the promoters of Roundup always say that glysophate is not toxic. Not that Roundup is not toxic, but that glysophate is not toxic. I’ve read somewhere (that i forget) that glysophate itself is pretty weak and ineffectual as a herbicide; glysophate alone is probably non-toxic. If you sprayed just glysophate on your lawn, you might see little to no effect. Roundup, on the other hand, is a concoction of many adjuvants to glysophate that disrupt cell walls so that glysophate can enter the cell and kill the vegetation. Always check to see if the person is defending glysophate by itself, or Roundup, the entire concoction. If they’re just defending glysophate they might be trying to confuse the issue.
