We’re all probably trying to save a little money and watch our spending. And while cooking meals at home instead of eating out at restaurants can save you some dough, it’s hard to know which recipes specifically will steer you in the right direction. That’s why we asked 10 awesome food bloggers for their most budget-friendly recipes.

You’ll notice that most of the recipes rely on pantry staples like canned tomatoes and beans and dry rice and pasta, and utilize cheaper protein sources like dry lentils and ground beef. One thing they all have in common? None of them are lacking in flavor.

The words “back to school” are honestly a trigger for the tumultuous time in life when I was required to spend literally all of my money on textbooks. Can you imagine dropping $88 for a USED 8-pound copy of General Chemistry, doing the same for every other class, and then dealing with the ensuing guilt of never opening any of them once? Yes, because you probably did too!

Nowadays, back-to-school time is a lot more fun — especially because I have a job and choose to allocate my funds towards new cookbooks (which will definitely be put to better use than those old textbooks). I speak for most of us at Kitchn when I say that we’re a bunch of nerdy home cooks who would never pass up the opportunity to learn a few more tips and tricks.

Shopping at a bulk store like Costco is a surefire way to find bargain prices on all kinds of goods — but the problem, I’ve found, is that you buy such large quantities to get the deal, that you often end up spending more money total than you would have at a typical grocery store. So while the price per ounce may be way cheaper, your out-of-pocket per trip is higher. (That $19 I just dropped on two liters of olive oil comes to mind.)

Of course, there are a bunch of things at Costco that are still only $5 or less. So with the help of my assistant (my mom, who’s ready to come out of retirement to be a Kitchn reporter now), I dug deep to come up with this list.

If you’re gonna spend just $5 (or less!) at Costco, you should do it on one of these seven groceries.

Note: Prices can vary by season and location; all were accurate at the time of reporting.

Every once in a while, a new product line hits stores that is so brilliant that we can’t help but face-palm and wonder why we didn’t come up with the idea or what took someone else so long. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does … man, is it amazing.

If you couldn’t tell from the title (or the intro) of this post, there’s a game-changing new line of baking stuff that launched online at Williams Sonoma today.

As an adult, I’ve lived in places with and without a dishwasher, and I have to say: I love that I have a dishwasher now. It wasn’t too much of an inconvenience not to have one when I was single, but as I’ve added a husband and kids to the mix the number of dishes generated daily has increased exponentially. So I’m grateful that there’s a machine that can help me out.

That being said: It’s annoying that you have to use different soap in the dishwasher than you do to wash the dishes by hand, because that’s double the kinds of soap I need to buy and keep up with. And it’s so annoying to go to start the dishwasher and discover that you’re out of detergent! I know it’s not the world’s worst problem, but still …

According to countless stories on the internet, in a pinch you can use a tiny bit of dish soap plus baking soda as a substitute for dishwasher detergent. Seems like a pretty great idea, but I was reluctant to try it. So I reached out to Travis Robertson, knowledge manager at Sears Home Services, and Dirk Sappok, head of product development at Miele, for some professional input.

In short, both said not to do it! And here’s the long version.

Casseroles don’t exactly have a reputation for being beacons of health in the weeknight dinner world. They’re often loaded with carbs and smothered with cheese (which is just the way we like them, to be honest). But this particular casserole diverts from the norm a bit. It’s lacking in the carb department, but don’t worry — it’s still smothered in plenty of cheese.

It’s a welcome casserole anomaly, and it’s for what’s for dinner tonight.
