With four children and three pets, I’m on a perpetual quest for a cleaning product that gets my floors squeaky clean. On a whim, I decided to try Murphy’s Oil Soap on our tile floors, as it’s one of those old-time standbys everyone seems to have at least heard of. When I saw that my mop water was dirtier than it’s ever been, I became a Murphy’s Oil Soap convert.

Turns out, however, that floors aren’t all it’s good for.

What do you like to do with your Thanksgiving leftovers? There are lots of solutions that will use up some of the meal — turkey soup, a Dagwood-style sandwich — but as delicious as they are, they don’t use everything that was on the table. (Unless you put gravy and cranberry relish on your turkey sandwich?)

My favorite post-Turkey Day, clean-out-the-refrigerator dish uses up everything and is delicious to boot. Introducing the Thanksgiving Shepherd’s Pie!

Anthropologie is offering 30 percent off its entire website through Sunday, November 25, as part of their Black Friday sales. You’re not going to find a wild grape variety no one’s ever heard of at Costco, and you’re definitely not going to find someone to make suggestions perfectly tailored to your taste. What you will find, though, are great deals on famous brands and some shockingly good Kirkland private-label wines. That’s why Costco is a great place to go for all your wine needs, if you’re looking to bring someone a bottle this holiday season.

Here are a few people you might have on your list, and the wines they really want to drink.

When it comes to holiday gifts, I freely admit that I’m a tough get. Not because I’m picky, no — I have an unapologetic love of pretty things! — but because, as someone who clearly loves to cook and does so for a living, I’ve amassed over time just about every necessity (and plenty more that’s downright unnecessary). Short of a white truffle, what do I really need? Nada.

Maybe you know a person or two like me? I challenged myself to put together a list of things that I find just unabashedly wonderful, beautiful, and welcome any time — not because I am nudging anyone to buy anything for me, but just in case you have a person or two you’d like to delight but feel a little perplexed over.

Over time, exposure to toxins, from pollutants in the environment, pesticides and preservatives to heavy metals and cancer-causing chemicals, can negatively affect many systems throughout the body. Those toxins are stored in tissues and cells throughout the body, often for years, building up and creating a host of problems. When done right, meaning in a […]

Several years ago a newlywed Prince William asked Giada de Laurentiis how to make better lasagna, because he said he kept trying to make it for wife Kate Middleton, but his lasagna never turned out correctly. Giada said her advice was to make sure to let the lasagna sit for a few minutes after removing it from the oven, because that lets the lasagna reabsorb any liquid that might have collected in the pan, and it makes sure the lasagna leaves the dish in its characteristic stacked-pasta-layer-cake form. “It has got to set,” she told him. “Otherwise it’ll just be a pool of mess.”

If I had a freezer full of frozen shrimp, I’d feel very rich. I think I’d be halfway to using the hashtag #blessed. Shrimp are healthful and easy to prepare; they cook quickly and take very little to make them delicious. My only problem is that I’ve never managed to keep a freezer full of shrimp for more than a day or two, because any time there are shrimp in the house, someone always eats them immediately. (I once saw my husband cook and eat a big plate of shrimp as a midnight snack, because they were more healthful than a grilled cheese sandwich, and they took about the same amount of time to make.)

Things I’m Up to and Interested In

GoFundMe I’m happy to share with the Primal audience: Buy Ranch Direct Fire Relief. The good folks at Buy Ranch Direct, a community of family-owned and -operated grass-fed beef ranches in California, lost their warehouse this fall in an electrical fire. They’re in the process of rebuilding, but insurance isn’t covering most of the loss.

Podcast I enjoyed: Freakonomics on open offices.

Article I found interesting: What schizophrenia can teach us about pleasure.

I certainly hope it works (without side effects): Scientists hope to block the molecule that accelerates the evolution of drug-resistant bacteria.

I can’t help but admire the entrepreneurial spirit, I just hope it doesn’t become standard: Air quality is so bad that San Francisco Uber drivers are selling masks to customers.

This is a powerful story: How winning the nation’s “best cheeseburger” caused a Portland burger joint to close down.

Question I’m Asking

With Google stopping development of its glucose-monitoring lens and all the other failures and dubious advancements, tech is realizing that biology’s a hard nut to crack. Do you think technology will ever figure out human biology and vault us into sci-fi territory?

Comment of the Week

“When you’re a gardener, a home is much more than just a place to keep your stuff. My husband and I are finally enjoying fruit from trees that we planted 5 years ago and have cared for since. In just the past few months alone, we have put in hundreds of hours of work wheelbarrowing woodchips to the backyard in preparation for a permaculture food-forest. I’m in Santa Rosa, CA, where we had the Tubb’s fire raging within a quarter-mile in October 2017. I feel very thankful to still have my home and garden.”

– Glad to hear you made it, Naomi.

When you cook a 22-pound turkey for Thanksgiving, leftovers are inevitable. The first round is devoured in a midnight dash to the fridge (straight from the Tupperware, no silverware required.) And then there’s Friday’s long-awaited turkey-cranberry panino, with a pile of green bean casserole on the side. Heaven. But my favorite meal of all—besides the main event, of course—is turkey noodle casserole.
