(I share Anne’s reasoning; she explained it beautifully.) And it’s not because I’m planning to let the dishes sit until the next morning. When hosting, I always make sure the dishes are done before my head hits the pillow. And it’s all because I don’t want to be crabby the next day.

When my daughter Sadie turned nine, she asked if she could have a weekly cooking night. Thursday nights became Sadie’s territory, and as is our habit, I knew we’d work out the details as we went.

When Sadie plans her dinner menu, she always includes dessert. This is her favorite chocolate cake, adapted from a recipe from one of the first books she took into the kitchen, Mollie Katzen’s Honest Pretzels.

When I ask female athletes about their goals, improving their glutes is at the top of the list. In this article, I will discuss how well the standard squat develops the glutes, along with squat variations and exercises that work better.

The hip thruster is an obvious glute developer, but some people find it embarrassing to thrust your hips into a barbell in a public setting. So I’ll make the exercises male-friendly as well, and I promise there will be no awkward hip thrusters.

These granola bars are the most decadent thing to emerge from my kitchen in quite a while, and let me tell you, they’re worth every rich, buttery, jam-filled bite. They’re the perfect hiking snack, bake-sale treat, or homey dessert (à la mode? Don’t mind if I do!). Or have one for breakfast, along with a strong mug of coffee and a side of self-satisfied bliss. Go on, enjoy one of these by yourself before they leave the kitchen — the recipe makes plenty, so you’ll still have some to share.

You might look like a beast grinding through heavy weight, but you’re not doing yourself many favors in the hypertrophy department. Pushing top-end weight with sub-optimal form may help you increase strength, but it won’t maximize muscle growth.

Performing a one-rep max has little benefit for hypertrophy because form and focus go out the window. As a result, you create little tension in the working muscle. But your body doesn’t know how much weight you’re lifting. All it knows is the amount of tension it feels.
