It’s the first day of fall and there’s so much to look forward to: Plaid! Colorful leaves! Trader Joe’s snacks! Seriously, the seasonal lineup of fall foods at Trader Joe’s is, hands-down, the best. From savory pumpkin ravioli to apple tarts, we’re totally falling for (get it?) these 10 must-try groceries.

In Okeechobee County, Florida, hundreds of cows are being evacuated from a ranch after a dike broke following intense rainfall from Hurricane Irma. Unfortunately, some cows have already drowned due to rising waters. A nearby ranch owner has offered to allow the cows to graze on his property while the other ranch dries out. Now, […]

You’ve been hearing about spiralizers for months (you have a friend who will not stop talking about “zoodles”), so you’re finally thinking about taking the plunge and buying one. You should. There are a million different things you can make with a spiralizer (beyond zoodles, we promise), and it helps you be creative and healthy, all at the same time.

I once knew a woman who remained such good friends with her exes that all 20 former flames showed up to her birthday party. I’m all for positive energy, but that was just plain weird. Breakups require time apart to break the couple bond created during the relationship. So, when someone, like the egocentric woman […]

With all the press around the importance of dining as a family, we’ve been making an effort to sit down most nights and eat together. But honestly, it’s pretty thankless. By the time dinner’s ready, my girls (almost 3 and 5) have been whining and asking for snacks for at least a half-hour, and inevitably about a minute after we sit down, I’m back up again fetching some crucial item (a grown-up fork instead of a baby one, bubbles water instead of regular, a pat of butter or the right kind of salt). We’re not having one of those made-for-TV moments and we’re not exactly connecting with each other. Occasionally I wonder if I’m doing it wrong — or if there’s a better way.

So I spoke Julie King, who along with Joanna Farber wrote How to Talk So Little Kids Will Listen. The book addresses all sorts of frustration points parents have with their little ones — and dinnertime is among them. Here’s what I learned.

It’s Friday, everyone! And that means another Primal Blueprint Real Life Story from a Mark’s Daily Apple reader. If you have your own success story and would like to share it with me and the Mark’s Daily Apple community please contact me here. I’ll continue to publish these each Friday as long as they keep coming in. Thank you for reading!

My weight gain happened when I was pregnant—I had 2 pregnancies back to back. When my first child was 4 months I was pregnant again, so I didn’t have time to lose the first amount of baby weight I put on. All in all I was 91 pounds heavier.

For years I would yo-yo diet, going on extreme calorie counting diets of
around 700 calories. I would lose loads of weight and once the event was over I would not be able to sustain the low calories and I would pile the weight on plus more.

It got so bad that I stopped taking my kids to school and my husband had to take them! I was fearful of the parents judging me and my weight that I
missed out on so much.

I was depressed, had extreme anxiety, inflammation in my joints, you name it I had it, I was starting to get blurred vision which was worrying as it’s a sign of early onset of diabetes. I was a complete mess but I was still so addicted to sugar.

I was so good at secretly eating and hiding my chocolate and cake wrappers from my husband. I would go to the shops and sneak the sugary treats in the house and then binge eat them in secret. My days revolved around my binges. It got so bad that I would often cry whilst I was bingeing but yet so addicted to the sugar I couldn’t stop!

In my early years I followed a pretty lowish carb diet and held a slim
weight. I had seen Mark’s Daily Apple and I soaked up all the information on how effective a low carb, high fat diet could stop you from craving sugar. I started the diet and I wanted to document my journey on Instagram to keep myself accountable. It’s called @healthy_girl_jen and is quite successful. I put all my time and effort into it and take pictures of my food and also post my transformation pictures.

The low carb diet stopped me from craving the sugar. Months went by and the weight was falling off me. Within 9 months I had lost 84 pounds and by the following year I had lost a total of 91 pounds.

I can’t tell you how much better I felt. I was able to take the kids to
school and go on play dates. My inflammation went, depression, anxiety, blurred vision went. I had the best Christmas ever! I wasn’t insecure, I was able to wear leggings that I had always dreamed to wear!

Thank you very much for all the information you put out there on this low
carb lifestyle! I am living proof that it works! Feel free to follow my Instagram pageI am so passionate about passing on the low carb journey to as many people as possible so they can benefit from all the wonderful things that it gives you!

I have my life back! I am truly blessed!

If you haven’t had that moment of panic after a grocery shopping trip gone awry, the rest of us worship you. Those of us who, at 6:17 p.m. on a Thursday night, bleary-eyed from a day of work, wander zombie-like around the grocery store throwing things like mangos and imported German mustard into our carts even though we wanted to make pasta that night. Or those of us who brave the 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon crowd at Trader Joe’s, elbows thrown over the last of the seasonal Jo Jo’s, strollers ramming up against our ankles, waiting patiently to get to the front of the line only to realize we forgot milk, which was the reason we came to the store in the first place.

Sure, grocery shopping can be a therapeutic, enjoyable activity when it’s done on our time, in our way, but everyone’s gotta eat. And often times, that “gotta eat” means you “gotta shop,” versus “get to shop.”

Want to get better at grocery shopping? Shawna Haner, Instacart‘s new markets associate is showing us the ropes. She spent time as a personal shopper with Instacart and knows her way around a grocery store. In case you’re not familiar with Instacart, it’s basically a service that lets you shop from local grocery stores online, and then a personal shopper picks up and delivers your order to you the same day. Basically, she’s a total pro at this stuff.

Chrissy Teigen may be a Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover model, TV host, and wife of near EGOT-winner John Legend, but she’s also your friendly neighborhood food blogger. Since starting her WordPress site So Delushious back in 2011, Teigen has made it clear that her life revolves around food. Last year, her debut cookbook, Cravings, ranked second only to Ina Garten’s on the best-selling list.

This woman really knows what she’s doing.

Although a wildly popular go-to dinner protein, chicken breasts often get a bad rap. There’s so little fat in a boneless, skinless chicken breast that many home cooks end up with something that’s dry or tasteless. (Then you get those groans from your family: Chicken again?) We have a foolproof method, though, that will result in moist, tender, and flavorful meat every time.

It’s technically called “dry-poaching,” and it’s far easier than it sounds. You just need some chicken (obviously), our instructions, and a few other supplies. Check out this list and get shopping. Don’t worry, these aren’t one-off unitasker tools that you’ll only use for chicken; you’ll end up using them again and again for other recipes, too.
