A growing number of people attempting to get in shape fast are intrigued by high-intensity interval training, or HIIT. Simply put, HIIT is a cardiorespiratory training technique alternating short bouts of intense anaerobic exercise and brief recovery intervals to maximize the efficiency of a workout. The trick is to push yourself hard enough in a short period of time that you cannot exercise more. A typical HIIT workout lasts from 20 to 30 minutes

Obesity markedly increases risk for diabetes, heart attacks, strokes and many cancers, all of which can lead to premature death. Once a person becomes obese, it is very difficult to return to and maintain a normal weight. All of the widely-promoted diets (low-fat, low-carbohydrate, calorie-counting and so forth) have failed to stop the incredible increase of obesity in North America over the last 50 years.Eating regular meals five days a week and markedly reducing calories for the other two days may be the best way to lose weight and keep it off. This approach to weight loss is called “intermittent fasting.” We have some good data on how effective this diet regimen is for animals, but we are just starting to see the results of research on humans. Most of the studies on humans do not ask participants to avoid all food on their “fast” days.

BOSS’s programming and recommendations are someone unique compared with the average international exercise physiology or strength and conditioning organization. It is also unique compared with what you’d see on the CrossFit main site or Jillian Michael’s blog. I’m often asked, when the rest of the world is saying that the best way to lose weight is aerobic exercise, why do we say high-intensity interval exercise is better? If you continue to read this blog and learn more about BOSS’s programming model, you’ll soon learn that I’m a geek. Being a geek whose job it is to advance exercise science, I am always questioning exercise programming models

On most days you head to the gym and ‘do the right thing’. You take out your training log, follow the reps and sets, add a little more weight than last week and walk out the door feeling pretty darn good about yourself. Other days, you’re not quite ‘feeling it’ and you spend less time squatting and more time chatting up the hot girl in the squat rack. Then there are some days you just walk into the gym feeling extra pumped and super focused. Sure you could bang out your regularly scheduled training program.

Previous researchers have found that CrossFit is able to improve both maximum aerobic capacity and body composition. However, the same researchers found that there may be concerns regarding the level of injury risk in participation. To assess whether there really is a large injury risk inherent in CrossFit, the following study was performed…The Study: The nature and prevalence of injury during CrossFit training, by Hak, Hodzovic, and Hickey, in The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, Publish Ahead of PrintWhat’s the background? Not that long ago, Bret published a guest post on this blog that reviewed the first study into CrossFit.
