Master Kazeka Muniz. Notice the awesome gi.

Next Friday, October 15th, Master Kazeka Muniz is flying all the way from Palmdale, CA to teach a seminar in Norfolk. If you have any interest in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, wrestling, or grappling in general, you really need to be at this seminar.
Why? Because Kazeka Muniz is the man.
If you know Chris Stolzman, you’ve probably heard of Kazeka. He’s Chris’ BJJ coach and used to work for KnuckleUp in Atlanta. He now runs a fitness center in Palmdale, Premium Fitness. And there’s plenty more reasons he’s awesome!

He’s a black belt under Carlos Gracie Junior at the Gracie Barra Academy.
He trained with the Russian AND Georgian Olympic Wrestling teams.
He coached the Cuban Olympic Wrestling team, including 4 gold medalists. He is still welcome on the mat with them at the Olympics.
He coached both Michael “The Count” Bisping and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.
He trained at the […]

There are Groks all over the globe! Australia, Singapore, Germany, Canada, Austria, Ireland, Norway, India, Ukraine, Hungary, South Korea, Thailand, Portugal, Sweden and in numerous states across the beautiful U.S. of A. If you’re reading this there is a Grok in your hometown, too.
By the looks of these pictures it appears that I’m well on my way to achieving my life goal of helping 10 million or more people take control of their health. Help me toward my goal, and help others “get Primal” by telling them about Mark’s Daily Apple and the Primal Blueprint. I need all the help I can get! Grok on!
The winner of this contest, chosen randomly, is MDA reader Kyle from Seattle, WA. Congrats to Kyle and many thanks to everyone that participated.

Mark’s Daily Apple readers show that with a little ingenuity and, perhaps, a dose of compromise (remember the 80/20) it’s entirely possible to successfully navigate restaurants and even (gasp!) the odd fast food stop. Ideal? In some cases, maybe not. Realistic? Absolutely. Because business lunches, birthday parties and travel does happen, it pays to know how to forage in the modern world.
Many thanks to everyone that submitted a picture as part of the “Foraging in a Fast Food Nation” contest. And the winner is…
Mark’s Daily Apple reader Adam. His is the fifth picture in the slideshow, the Chopped Chicken Cobb Salad with an apple instead of bread from Panera.

It turns out that when I announced the “Meet a Farmer” contest and encouraged people to make a connection with their local food suppliers I overlooked the fact that many of the farmers themselves read Mark’s Daily Apple. So whether you took a picture of yourself and sent it in, or made the pilgrimage to a local farm or your town’s farmers’ market to grab a photo, you were entered to win the Primal prize.
Thanks to everyone that submitted a photo. I hope the experience was well worth the effort whether you won this contest or not. Speaking of…
The winner of this contest, chosen randomly, is MDA reader Luigi. Luigi is the one who snapped a photo with his free-range egg supplier, Tricia (the blonde woman with the bird).
The contest may be over but you can still meet and greet your local food suppliers. Make the effort if you haven’t […]

When I first released Eat Stop Eat the entire book was under 75 pages.
As short as that sounds, it had everything you needed to know in order to be successful at losing weight using the Eat Stop Eat lifestyle of flexible intermittent fasting combined with resistance training.
However…since Eat Stop Eat is an e-book, it would be a crime not to take advantage of the massive benefits that the e-book format can offer.
Namely – The ease of updating any work.
So that’s exactly what I did.
The New Expanded Eat Stop Eat is over 140 pages long and now contains updated information on many of the health benefits of flexible intermittent fasting including some VERY relevant information on weight loss, fasting and chronic systemic inflammation (which I think I will be the next BIG health issue).
I’ve updated the references to include everything that I deemed relevant that was published since ESE’s original launch.
I’ve […]

Contest: Fiddle About

The Prize:
Yes, I dare you to find another website that holds a contest to win vegetables. But these aren’t just any veggies. They are fiddlehead greens, the Rolls Royce of the vegetable world. Fiddleheads are only available for a small window in April and May, and even as such, you’d have to beat the other foodies and sous chefs to the market to snatch them up before they disappear. So I found the next best thing. Today’s winner will receive an entire case of frozen fiddlehead greens courtesy of Norcliff Farms. Norcliff is the largest fiddlehead green grower in the world; when it comes to these greens, you can bet they aren’t fiddling about (pun absolutely intended, absolutely). For a little more info on these curled beauties, read my post, “On the Trail of the Elusive Fiddlehead.” And here’s a recipe for fiddleheads with bacon, the Rolls Royce […]

I am nervous right now as I type this post. I'm going to talk about something personal and it doesn't have anything to do with getting in shape. Ever since the age of 12, when I lost my mom to breast cancer, I wanted to do something that will would help find a cure. I used to dream of finding a cure myself, so other kids wouldn't lose their moms to breast cancer. I always planned on doing all the "walks for the cure" and raising money for breast cancer research, etc. Regrettably, close to 30 years have gone by and I haven't done one single thing that would raise awareness or help in regards to breast cancer. My hope is that this post will be a start.

[October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the U.S. With 110 women dying of breast cancer per DAY in the U.S. alone…we […]

I Want to Lose Weight Fast!

Everyday, thousands of people look at the scale and say “i want to lose weight” or “i want to lose weight fast” and then go about their day and forget about it, or push it off until it becomes an even bigger problem. So if you’re one of those people who looked at the scale today and said that I want to lose weight already, then you’re in luck – because I’m going to teach you the big secret about weight loss…

The big secret about losing weight is that it’s NOT complicated…
The truth is that losing weight is that despite “weight loss gurus” trying to confuse you with made up terms and scientific jargon, it’s not complicated. In fact, it’s incredibly simple and comes down to two words – caloric deficit. If you take in less calories than you put out during the day, then you will lose weight that […]

The Prize:
Witstick. Got 3 inches of floor space? Want an intense, full-body workout in minimal time? Pick up a Witstick. If you’re trying to lift heavy things, this giant stick of heft cuts the mustard. At just 2.5 or 3 inch diameter and 2 feet long it is deceivingly heavy. I was sent one of these awhile back and it’s really nifty. Its rubber covering makes it easy to grip and it’s the right size and shape for a wide variety of movements. I like to hoist it on my shoulder and just go for a walk. Eventually, you’ll be swinging it, tossing it, snatching it, and lunging with it in a choreography limited only by your own creativity. These things are handmade by John Byrne and John Muse, long time readers of MDA. There are several weight varieties, from 22 to 40 lbs. The winner of today’s […]

WOW: Merry Go Round

2 miles for time:
400+ Meter Sprint
Walking Lunges
Broad Jump
Walk
This workout is designed to be done with a partner or group. See the “How-to” section below for instructions.

How-to:
Warmup: A couple rotations of the Grok Squat and a few 50 meter runs at moderate effort.
This workout is designed to be done with a partner and is best done on a track. From the starting line Partner 1 sprints around the track while Partner 2 performs walking lunges. When Partner 1 circles the track and reaches Partner 2 the switch is made. Now Partner 2 sprints and Partner 1 performs walking lunges until Partner 2 reaches Partner 1. At this point another switch is made. This time, though, instead of walking lunges Partner 2 will perform broad jumps around the track until Partner 1 catches up. Proceed in this manner, alternating sprints with walking lunges, broad jumps and a slow walk (the […]
