Personal Trainers BEWARE!!!
In 2010, a Japanese Fitness Robot named Taizo will begin stealing all of your clients.
Initially designed as a rehabilitation robot for Japanese senior citizens, Taizo has performed well in its 5 test runs at group homes and community centers. During these tests, seniors found it easy and fun to mimic their robotic Richard Simmons.
In fact, company representaties were thrilled with how well Taizo interacted with the seniors.

Sadly, it was only after Taizo had left the building, did they find out that most of the seniors were senile and had confused Taizo for their grandchildren.

Taizo is expected to be ready for commercialization in 2010.

The King Of The Beach MMA took place last Sunday, September 6th, at Port O’ Call in Kill Devil Hills. The event was a fundraiser for the OBX Select Wrestling Team, a non-profit traveling team ran by Coach Kyle Briglia.
There were approximately 200 people at the event, which goes to show how popular MMA is becoming even in the Outer Banks. For the main fight, Wayne Hunter vs Derek “Pole”, the crowd went wild – you’ll see it on the video.
We missed a couple of the fighters’ names, so if you identify somebody on the videos, leave a comment at the bottom of the post and we’ll update the videos.

NYC Declares War on Soda

New York City’s public health officials opened a new front in their struggle against high-calorie beverages on Monday, unveiling a new ad campaign that graphically depicts globs of human fat gushing from a sideways drink bottle.
Mmmmmmmm….I could rally go for a great big glass of globby liquified human body-fat.

Fig and Goats Cheese Pizza

Since I started ‘borrowing’ my neighbors figs from their tree, I’ve been using them in all sorts of dishes from frozen yogurt to couscous to salsa and now a simple pizza. When I do venture out to have some pizza (a rarity usually with drink involved) I’ll always go for a thin crust version. Less filling, tastes great (name that ad!)
With all the figs that seem to have ‘arrived’ somehow in my possession I thought this would work great in a pizza, plus I needed something quick to make for my hungry and cranky Missus. I’ve made a similar type pizza before with lavash but I found this multi-grain flat bread version with flax, which I thought would make great alternative. (Turns out it did.) You might think this is a lot of fig but believe me it works and isn’t too sweet especially with the goats cheese. Total […]

Did You Play Today?

The U.S. Dept of Health and Human Services and the Ad Council today launched a new series of PSAs designed to address childhood obesity. Featuring characters from the upcoming film Where the Wild Things Are, the PSAs are an extension of HHS’ Childhood Overweight and Obesity Prevention campaign with the Ad Council, which encourages children and families to lead healthy lifestyles.

These PSAs cost millions of dollars.
But do they work?
Will this PSA get your kid to put down the Wii controller and go outside and play?

I talk about different forms of interval training and circuit training on this blog on a regular basis. I tend to shy away from discussing things like lactic acid and oxygen debt, because these are "zone out" terms. Many people tend to skim when blogs begin to read like Biology text-books. I want to explain how intervals work and go into more details, without making this a mind-numbing technical article.

Why Do We Push, Then Rest A Little, Then Push Hard Again?

Since intense exercise burns a lot of calories, why don't we just push hard the whole time instead of mixing in periods of active rest? I mean…if you have 15 minutes to do some form of training aimed at fat loss, why not spend […]

The basis of Tabata Training is 4 minutes of intense interval training. What you are doing is taking an exercise we’ll use sprints as an example here. Sprint as hard as you can for 20 seconds Walk for 10 seconds Repeat 7 more times for a total of 8 sets. So what you have is a total of 4 minutes workout time. Tabata Training can be done with a number of different exercises the idea is to use an exercise that gets the whole body involved or at least the major muscle groups.Tabata Training can be done with Barbells, Dumbells, Kettlebells or just Bodyweight exercises. I’ll give you some other exercises and routines to try in a minute but first let me give you some background and how Tabatas work. Tabata Training was developed by Izumi Tabata (imagine that) at the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Tokyo, Japan. […]
