A few years ago I decided to visit a few fitness forums to give helpful advice. Unfortunately back then, there were only two types, hardcore bodybuilding forums or extremely generic health and fitness forums. My experience with forums back then was a negative one. Luckily things are looking better on the fitness front. These days, there are several that are worth your time. I have a few suggestions of my own, but would love to use this post to create a growing list of good forums. Feel free to add to my list in the comment section!

[On the Internet, you have to weed through a lot of pollution to find the good stuff. Once you find a good forum make sure and protect it and keep it from degrading into something bad.]

It's Family Fun Fitness Time!!!

Obesity costs America billions and billions of dollars each and every year.
And, in case you hadn’t heard it, America is having a little trouble balancing it’s books lately.
So, in an effort to trim the fat and earn some tax dollars, America is going to war against obesity.
And, damn it, this is a war that America is determined to win.
And here’s how they’re going to do it…..starting from the top and working our way down to your local city government.

President Obama

The President has said that he is in favor of of a sin tax on soda.

As well, he and the family have become unofficial spokespeople for both the local and organic food movements.

The Federal Government

Obesity will likely be addressed in the new healthcare bill, but to what extent is anybody’s guess at this point.

The CDC’s Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity provides all sorts of information […]

Before you start watching the video, let’s go a few weeks back to the King Of The Beach MMA event held at Port O’ Call, in Kill Devil Hills, September 06th.
At the very end of Wayne Hunter’s fight, his coach is telling him to choke his opponent – the only problem is that Wayne has mounted, and was in no position to pull that choke. Anybody with basic Jiu Jitsu experience would know that.
Morrison, while filming the fight, politely tells Wayne’s coach that he didnt have the lock and would not be able to choke his opponent (you can listen to the entire conversation during the last minute of the video); his coach goes ballistic over Morrison’s advice and immediately challenges him to get on the “stage”.
Fast forward 20 days after that silly discussion – Morrison receives a text message from Wayne Hunter saying his coach was going to come […]

The basis of Tabata Training is 4 minutes of intense interval training. What you are doing is taking an exercise we’ll use sprints as an example here. Sprint as hard as you can for 20 seconds Walk for 10 seconds Repeat 7 more times for a total of 8 sets. So what you have is a total of 4 minutes workout time. Tabata Training can be done with a number of different exercises the idea is to use an exercise that gets the whole body involved or at least the major muscle groups.Tabata Training can be done with Barbells, Dumbells, Kettlebells or just Bodyweight exercises. I’ll give you some other exercises and routines to try in a minute but first let me give you some background and how Tabatas work. Tabata Training was developed by Izumi Tabata (imagine that) at the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Tokyo, Japan. […]

Wish I had included this quote in ‘How Much Protein’:
Finally, research published in 2008 by Beelen et al [Beelen M, 2008] suggests that the effect that eating protein during a workout has on protein synthesis is no different then the effect that the workout alone has when you continue to measure after 9 hour of recovery.

Bottom line, it’s your workouts, and how well they are planned and how hard you work, that determine how much muscle you gain.
Going to file this one away for the 2nd edition!

Last month, TIME magazine ran an article which claimed that due an increase in post-workout appetite, exercise is not an effective weight loss technique.
Understandably, this created a furor in the fitness/weight loss industry.
Fitness gurus were seen all over tv and the internet sputtering about how the author didn’t have his facts straight and that he didn’t know what he was talking about and blah, blah, blah.
Essentially, they were worried that they were going to lose business because of this article.
And they probably did.
But, was it fair? Was the article correct? Is exercise ineffective as a weight loss tool?
Let’s look at the science.
The TIME article was based on the findings of a single study conducted on obese, postmenopausal women.
The study concluded that:
In this study of previously sedentary, overweight or obese, postmenopausal women we observed no difference in the actual and predicted weight loss with 4 and 8 KKW of exercise (72 […]

Over the past few weeks we’ve had so many students accomplish so much, that we saw the need to feature their accomplishments here on the blog.
What the title should really say is “Why does KnuckleUp Have The Best, Most Committed Students In The Outer Banks?”
And the reason is that our students ROCK! Seriously, the level of dedication these folks show class after class, bootcamp after bootcamp, fight after fight, is incomparable. And we’re very proud of each and every one of them!
And here are just a few of those students:
Reverend Jay Bowman completely reshaped his body from an average-chubby to become the most ripped minister in the outer banks.
He not only gained muscle, but lost a ton of weight!
Jay was a big supporter of Matt Costa’s beach fitness bootcamp this summer – and proof of its amazing results!
Vonnie Wescott lost 30 lbs in our kickboxing classes – and she enjoyed […]

As the debate over President Obama’s healthcare proposal rages on, Taco Bell continues to give Americans exactly what they crave….melty, crunchy, spicy and heart attack inducing.
I especially love the tagline at the end…

Of course, I would change it just a little bit.
