A little over a month ago I was doing a bit of research online on improving posture. This research wasn't for a blog post, it was because I was trying to insure that my own posture didn't get worse due to sitting at a desk all day. While searching for a good routine to improve posture I stumbled across a series of great blog posts on the subject. The site I found is called JCD Fitness and I am quickly becoming a fan. The author (JC) does a great job at explaining technical subjects in an easy-to-understand, easily digestible format. In this day of information overload, I seek out sites like this.

[Probably the most common type of bad posture is due to sitting for long periods of time. Many of us sit all day at our jobs as well as during our free time. This post will explore how to […]

One Monkey will mess you up, the other…not so much

The above picture was taken from the article “Proof mounts on restricted diet” found on the BBC news website.
Obviously, there is a difference between these two monkeys…
The best way I can describe it is as follows – When you look into the eyes of the monkey on the right, you see there is a WHOLE LOT OF FIGHT left in him. The monkey on the left…nothing.
Here’s the kicker… Both of these monkeys are OLD…27 to be exact (In monkey years..these guys are geriatric). The difference is the one on the left ate more over his lifetime then the one of the right who was calorie restricted.
So just as the title of the article says..the evidence for the life-extending properties of calorie restriction is definitely mounting.
But it’s not just life extension. It’s quality of life.
Look at the two monkeys again. They are […]

A Cure for Tennis Elbow?

Tennis elbow is a condition where the outer part of the elbow becomes sore and tender. It is commonly associated with playing tennis and other racquet sports, though the injury is not unique to racquet sports.
The condition is more formally known as lateral epicondylitis (”inflammation to the outside elbow bone”) , lateral epicondylosis, or simply lateral elbow pain.

And with the pain comes weakness and decreased function of the affected arm. When it’s bad, you can forget about holding a suitcase or playing tennis or even shaking hands.
In a nutshell, it’s a real pain in the….lateral epicondyle.
Current treatments include:

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): ibuprofen, naproxen or aspirin
Heat or ice
A counter-force brace or “tennis elbow strap” to reduce strain at the elbow epicondyle, to limit pain provocation and to protect against further damage.
Rest
Acupuncture
Blood injection (possibly augmented by plateletpheresis)
Botulinum toxin
Extra-corporeal shock wave therapy (lithotriptor)
Heat therapy
Immobilization of the forearm and elbow using […]

Dave's Genesis Tattoo Shop in Collington

On our first Instructor Spotlight, we’ll talk a little about Dave Bein, creator of Genesis Tattoo.
Dave Bein goes beyond the definition of a well-rounded guy; he’s an extremely gifted tattoo artist, a huge fan of martial arts (he’s got a black belt in Karate from his father, who was a Chuck Norris student!), a KnuckleUp instructor,  and a darn-good graphic designer on his spare time.
Dave’s history with Martial Arts and fitness began when he was a child, and his dad (freaking Chuck Norris’ student) taught him Karate. By age 19, he had already trained Judo, Boxing, and Jiu Jitsu, and was involved with the so-called NHB fighting (No-Holds-Barred, previous to the MMA scene).
Dave And The OBX Gym
KnuckleUp is honored to have Dave teaching special Kickboxing classes, and when his schedule allows, sparring on the ring with the students. With the opening of the brand new […]

According to the  USA Today, President Obama has begun his health care push.
And you know what that means.
Like it or not, President Obama wants to give you a great big taste of Canadian style healthcare.
So, I thought that I would take a few minutes to let you know a little bit about my experience with the Canadian health care system.

It is a massive (government) bureaucracy that eats up a lot of money and can frustrate the people who rely upon it.
It’s full of hardworking doctors/nurses/technicians/etc who work long hours trying to keep sick people from dying
It’s seems to work fairly effectively – according to the CIA, Canadian life expectancy is 81.23 yrs. (#8 in the world)

So, let’s compare that to the current American health care system.

It is a massive (medical insurance) bureaucracy that eats up a lot of money and can frustrate the people who rely upon it.
It’s full of […]

The art of ferociousness in its finest, dirtiest form. That is what UFC offers, or at least it did at one time. Gone are the days of the blood-lust, the modern UFC looks more like a ballet. In its early beginnings UFC was the anything goes, bare knuckle blood fest that pulled from underground foreign fighting circuits and targeted the violence nurtured American public.

It was for people who liked to watch men destroy each other, plain and simple. Nowadays, UFC has accommodated itself to the mainstream. Instead “Oh, my god, how much more can he take?” commentators are more likely to be heard saying “My god, the ref called that on in a hurry.”
What inspired this radical change in style? When The Ultimate Fighter began on UFC, the producers knew some changes had to be made. Even under the […]

Increasing natural Human Growth Hormone (HGH) levels in your body is a major key in staying lean year round. It is also a plays a big role in preserving muscle mass when losing those last few pounds of body fat. I'm convinced that anyone can lose weight up to a certain point, but it is that last little bit of fat that takes skill. In my opinion the two biggest fat loss skills to master are to eat in a way that produces a calorie deficit over time & workout in a way that boosts up your levels of HGH and increases that calorie deficit. Another great skill to master is to keep your insulin levels stable, but that is a topic for another post.

[Here is a picture from 1959 of a group of surfers. Surfers are almost always lean because many of them fast all day out in the […]

Chinese martial art
Throughout history, people from all over the world have developed martial arts systems of their own. The roots are the same — local authorities once outlawed the lower class from owning and using weapons of any form, prompting people to find a way to protect themselves regardless. Korean martial art, Japanese martial art and other systems of martial art were created as farmers needed to protect themselves and their lands from invaders. These people, caught between the power struggles that went on around them, had to have some form of self-defense. This is how the Russian martial art developed as well.

Russia is no exception. Russia has a long history of internal conflict and invasion. It is a massive country with borders that span over 11 time zones. The Russians came to expect the unexpected when in battle and no two enemies would […]
