Tabata Training is a High Intensity Interval Training Workout that lasts four minutes and consists of several different exercises, 20 seconds on, 10 seconds off (rest periods after each exercise.) There are many forms of full workouts, exercises to incorporate, and each workout can be designed to give you a different result, depending on what goals you are working towards. Tabata Training is great for calorie burning, muscle endurance, agility & speed progress, and lean muscle development. Technically, you should stick with the four minute workout in these specific 20 second on, 10 second off “zones,” however, if you are a first-time “Tabata-er,” or a deconditioned individual, you may choose to change this based on your current fitness level.Tabata training was born after Japanese scientist Izumi Tabata and his colleagues compared the results of moderate intensity training and HIIT. The study evaluated two groups of speed-skating athletes. The first group trained on ergonomic cycles at moderate intensity for one hour, five days per week, for a total of six weeks.

We’ve all probably eaten and drunk way too much over the past couple of weeks, and most of us are probably dreading getting back to the gym. Whilst it is common to feel like you might not have time to go, now with Tabata training, there really is no excuse to not work out.Devised by Japanese scientist Dr Izumi Tabata, the High Intensity Interval training workout lasts just 4 minutes, with 20 seconds of effort, followed by 10 seconds of rest. Moves are designed to target the whole body, or at least the major muscle groups, so you get a muscular workout as well as a cardiovascular one. For example, you could do press ups, lunges, squats and leg raises. Once you have done all these, you’ll be 2 minutes into it, so repeat the process and you’re done.Whilst it might sound way too good to be true, 4 minutes of this and we can pretty much guarantee you’ll feel differently about it.

There has been a lot of commotion lately about Tabata training. Everyone in the fitness industry is using it. It’s based on the research of Izumi Tabata and his colleagues at the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Japan. The protocol they used, which was based on the training that Japanese speed skaters were doing on the ice, included 7 to 8 x 20-second sprints on a stationary bicycle (about 170% of VO2max) with just 10 seconds recovery 5 days per week for 6 weeks. That’s a tough 6 weeks

“Tabata” is the name of a particular type of workout program that provides similar health benefits to that of cardio workouts, but Tabata has a bit more spice. Instead of hours upon hours or exercise, Tabata can be completed in 4 minutes.  Tabata falls under the category of high intensity training or high intensity interval training.

Tabata seems to be one of the new fitness buzzwords, but in fact, it’s a concept that’s been around for over 10 years. In 1996, Dr. Izumi Tabata used a specific method of interval training for his study published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. In the study, he had cyclists perform 20 seconds of all-out effort followed by 10 seconds of rest. The participants repeated seven to eight sets of the exertion-rest intervals, equaling just about 4 minutes of actual workout time

Tabata training is a type of High Intensity Interval Training, or HIIT.  This version of HIIT is based on a 1996 study by Izumi Tabata (a physiology professor in Japan) and his colleagues initially involving Olympic speedskaters. He conducted the tests on 2 groups of athletes; 1 of the groups used the moderate intensity interval training and the other using high intensity interval training. In group one; the athletes were training in moderate intensity workouts (70% intensity VO2max) for five days a week for a total of six weeks with each training session lasting an hour.Group two trained in the high intensity workouts for 4 days a week for a total of 6 weeks with each session lasting 4 minutes, at 20 seconds of intense training (170% intensity VO2max) and 10 seconds of rest.Group 1 had a significant increase in the aerobic system (cardiovascular system). However, the anaerobic system (muscles) gained little or no results at all.Group 2 showed much improvement in all their athletes. Their aerobic systems increased much more than group ones, and their anaerobic systems increased by 28%.Conclusion

Tabata training was named after Izumi Tabata, Ph.D., a former researcher at Japan’s National Institute of Fitness and Sports. After I took my first Tabata inspired class I would have thought it was the Japanese word for water boarding or brussel sprouts. Though I wouldn’t exactly describe my first experience as pleasant, I did go back for more. Having not been familiar with Tabata prior to my first class, I wasn’t really sure what I was getting into, but my introduction came hard and fast.

What’s the best protocol for fat loss? Well, it may just be tabata.Tabata is a high intensity training protocol, named after its creator; Dr. Izumi Tabata is a Japanese researcher who conducted a study on elite athletes and found their fitness levels improved by 28% when they performed the prescribed protocol of 20 second intervals of high intensity followed by 10 seconds of rest for a total of eight rounds, equaling four minutes in duration. The key to Tabata protocol is to put forth maximal effort for each 20-second interval. Keep in mind there’s a big difference between maximal effort and an increase in effort, so if you want to blast fat make sure you give it your all!Why Tabata Protocol WorksPerforming steady state cardio and maintaining the same moderate intensity level throughout an entire workout for 30-60 minutes burns calories while you’re in motion. That’s all fine and dandy, but the benefit of high intensity interval training like Tabata is that you can sizzle calories not only during the working intervals, but also during rest periods and for hours after the workout is complete.
