Packing up to move is the worst — and the kitchen just may be the trickiest space of your whole house because of all those small, fragile items you have to carefully wrap and contain. On the flip side of that: Unpacking in your new-to-you kitchen (as long as nothing’s broken) is just about the best. I know, because we just moved into a new house and we got to start all over — yay!

Starting fresh in a new place is an opportunity to really make that space work for you. So before you unpack, do these six things to make sure you’re getting the most out of it!

The British have a thing about homemade birthday cakes. Even mothers who don’t often bake will once a year struggle with fondant and food colorings to create novelty cakes in the shape of soccer pitches or Disney princesses for their little darlings.

And it’s not just for kids — we love to celebrate every family birthday with something fresh from the oven and triumphantly frosted.

Kitchn’s Delicious Links column highlights recipes we’re excited about from the bloggers we love. Follow along every weekday as we post our favorites.

Shorts weather is upon us, which means there’s asparagus and radishes and a whole bunch of spring produce that I should want to eat right now. We wait all winter for something that feels a little more fresh, right?

As food writers and editors we tend to write about food seasonally, but when I saw this recipe for a garlic butter tomato baked chicken from Little Spice Jar, I threw all of that aside because it looks like a dream dinner. Seriously, I can’t stop looking at the photos that accompany this recipe and planning my attack.

Chicken covered in cheese? Oh hell yes. Out-of-season tomatoes that are roasted in a bunch of balsamic vinegar and olive oil? Gimme!

Sardinia, Italy, is a place where time seems to stand still. The residents of this Blue Zone region are renowned for living long, healthy, happy and relatively stress-free lives. They have a saying, (which has since been popularized in the Julia Roberts movie, Eat, Pray, Love) that seems to capture their relaxed approach to life. The […]

Recently I suffered a stomach bug. Luckily it was one of those that go through the system pretty quickly, but while it hung around, it was pretty unpleasant! By using natural flu remedies I was able to recover fairly quickly. As you probably know, staying hydrated when you’re sick is of key importance and that’s why […]

I’ve been loving listening to Trader Joe’s new podcast, Inside Trader Joe’s. It’s well-produced and the people on it are pretty funny, and it really does keep surprising me with new information. I just listened to episode four, though, and it broke my heart because they explain why they will never sell their products online.

Sure, there’s a good reason for it, but that’s probably cold comfort to those of us who don’t live near a Trader Joe’s and just want some cookie butter, lavender dryer sachets, and a bucket of dried fruit.

We’ve already covered why wedding registries are a necessary evil. (For those who missed it, the abridged version goes something like this: Everyone is going to ask where you’re registered, people are going to buy you stuff no matter what, you might love being able to pull out a platter that your grandmother gave you long after she’s gone, etc.).

Convinced? Yay! Staring at a blank computer screen wondering where to start? Boo!

Don’t worry — we’ve complied a list of the 15 essential kitchen items you should register for, and we’ve gone as far as to list the exact product you should ask for, sometimes even with options based on your tastes. Consider it our wedding present to you. We’ll just assume our invitation must have gotten lost in the mail?

During my freshman year of college, I lived in a small dorm that was a ways from the dining hall and instead had a small kitchen in the basement. That left me to cook most of my dinners, but my options were pretty limited when I shared the space with 30 other residents. So a whole lot of my meals relied on a jar of marinara sauce.

I’d toss pasta with it, make English muffin pizzas with it, and spoon it over pre-cooked breaded chicken breast for a hacked version of chicken Parm. I figured that sauce was completely multipurpose — and it is, to some extent.

The thing I realized later down the road is that marinara sauce is really not intended for pizza, whether that’s an English muffin pizza or an actual pizza. I don’t mean to be fussy, but there’s one big thing that sets them apart. Here’s what it is.
