As soon as the cold days of winter hit, I find myself overcome with an intense craving for hot chocolate. Nothing seems to usher in the season quite like a steamy mug with a marshmallow floater. I love making holiday cookies and treats with my kids. We keep a bunch in the freezer to take out when we have company, we love giving them away as gifts, and of course we eat some ourselves! The secret to our success is keeping things as simple as possible. I’ve tried out plenty of complicated recipes with my kids and it’s never worth it; with so many hands, cookie time can go from festive to hectic in no time.

We’ve come to rely on a few recipes that we enjoy every year. My three kids were able to help when they were small and needed a step stool, and now that they are older they can make them themselves.

When you’re totally snooping on somebody’s shopping list, there’s no other word for it. You’re not being “curious” — you’re just being straight-up nosy. But I couldn’t help it. Left to my own devices for a minute while I was at my favorite local cocktail lounge in Louisville reporting on their new cocktail menu, I spied a scrap of paper. There among the scrawled lines noting limes, sugar cubes, mint, and rosemary was an item that made me furrow my brow: cheap rice. Not just rice. Cheap rice.

I have a sordid history with squatting. It’s been a classic love-hate relationship, mixed with heartbreak, disappointment, and pain (dramatic, I know). When I was coming up as an athlete, like most guys, I was obsessed with the bench press. Unfortunately for me, I was really good at benching, which meant that’s all I wanted to do.

For some people, money is no object. For the rest of us, it is all the objects. Even still, sometimes, we want to go all out and spoil someone who is extra special or has been over-the-top helpful this past year. If you have a loved one who has gone above and beyond and you really (really) want to thank them, consider one of these fancy, splurgy gifts. And then give everyone else on your list a stick of gum and a hug.
