A quick YouTube search of Jacques Pépin, French culinary master, making eggs will reveal a very noticeable pattern. Aside from the obvious (his omelets always result in unmatched perfection!), there’s a certain kind of gadget that he uses to nail the dish every single time: a nonstick pan.

Depending on where you are in the country, the new school year is either underway or fast approaching. My own first grader is headed back to school next week. It has been a whole year since I’ve regularly packed her lunch box (she had half-day kindergarten last year), so getting back into our school lunch groove has involved dusting off the lunch bags, shopping for a few new supplies, and talking about school lunch.

These are the five questions that I ask my daughter before the school year begins and that we use throughout the school year to get her excited about school lunch and to prepare her for packing her own lunches one day.

Kitchn’s Delicious Links column highlights recipes we’re excited about from the bloggers we love. Follow along every weekday as we post our favorites.

Chicken-fried steak has the crispy coating of fried chicken on the outside and then (surprise!) tender steak on the inside. The combination is a beloved Southern classic simply because it’s the best of both worlds.

Using that very same logic, this popcorn chicken-fried steak recipe from The Candid Appetite is the best of THREE worlds. It’s got the bite-sized appeal of popcorn chicken, the crispiness of fried chicken, and the absolute satisfaction of perfectly cooked steak. Any indecisive hungry people in the house? This dinner’s for them.

I first started haunting HomeGoods for the cookware. After nabbing a Staub cast iron grill pan for half price, I was hooked. I’d start planning my routes around town to pass by the store so that I had an excuse to run in and check the current selection.

Makenna Held is the current owner of the Courageous Cooking School at La Peetch, Julia Child’s former summer home in Provence, France — and she has some pretty big shoes to fill (both literally and figuratively).

Before the serial entrepreneur saw a listing for the legendary property back in 2015, Makenna had zero formal culinary training and had never considered running a cooking school as part of her future. But as soon as the house nestled in the rural French countryside went on the market, Makenna knew that she had what it takes to keep the magic alive. (And she has a lot more in common with Julia Child that she may think.)

Between movie nights at home, my kids’ after-school cravings, and my nervous-energy snacking while I work, it’s safe to say my family eats a lot of popcorn.

Usually I pop plain kernels in my trusty silicone popcorn popper. It’s cheaper than (and just as fast as) the bags from the store, and I can control the sodium and flavorings, so I can legitimately call it a healthy snack. But sometimes we want the full-on faux-butter goodness you can only get from the movie theater — without actually going to the theater.

That’s where the store-bought stuff comes in.

Olive oil is not something that gets used in my kitchen lightly: I use it in practically everything I cook, and I cook a lot. Still, I’m always shocked just how quickly I can get through a bottle — and by how expensive my olive oil habit can be.

I’ve long been on the hunt for a bottle from the grocery store that I can use every day without fail — one that delivers a mild, peppery flavor and won’t destroy my grocery store bill. After much searching, I finally found the bottle that delivers all of this and more.

Julia Child knows how to kick off an iconic television career. While the first episode of most shows — especially classic shows — highlights its imperfections, the first episode of The French Chef is 30 minutes of soothing perfection.

From the first notes of her jaunty opening song, I’m completely spellbound. She looks into the camera and says “Hello, I’m Julia Child!” and it’s funny to imagine a time where her voice didn’t spark instant recognition.

Welcome to the very beginning of The French Chef. Your future cooking legend is here, and she brought beef.

A couple of months ago, I reviewed nine of the best cheeses at Trader Joe’s, because I have the best job in the history of jobs. Because pretty much everything in the cheese case is delicious — and because I am the kind of person who would spend all of her money on cheese — I asked my Facebook friends to help me narrow it down by recommending their favorites.

I was completely unprepared for the number of enthusiastic cheese-related comments that post received, and I was also surprised by how many people said that Unexpected Cheddar was their hands-down fave.
