When it comes to cleaning, we all have habits that we’ve learned from our families. Whether you come from a bleach-loving household or one that’s figured out all sorts of home remedies to get a kitchen clean, the smells and techniques we inherited are part of our culture. And while I love America, sometimes other places do it better — like maybe Germany and, probably, France.

Assuming the French know some things about cleaning that Americans don’t (I mean, they know a lot more about wine and cheese, so why not cleaning?), I reached out to my French friend Clotilde to learn her secrets.

When you smother chopped chicken breast, crispy potatoes, and tender broccoli in a sweet and tangy honey-mustard sauce, you know you’ve got something good on your hands. This one-pan dinner perfection is a dream for busy weeknights, or nights when you just don’t want to cause much of a stir in the kitchen.

Here’s how it comes together: Toss everything on a sheet pan, roast until the vegetables are caramelized and the chicken is tender, then pile the mix into shallow bowls to catch the sauce. There’s no need for a side dish — this is a complete meal as-is. Just gather everyone around the table, grab forks and napkins, and dig in.

Less than four percent of Americans walk or ride their bike to work, but walking just a little bit every day can have a drastic effect on your health. And walking even more than a little bit brings even more benefits. Generally speaking, psychologists have found that walking, even when you’re heading somewhere unpleasant, boosts […]

When faced with grossness in the kitchen (read: the whole house has the flu, or you found a cockroach infestation under the sink, or the dog trashed the room after eating who-knows-what), it’s tempting to bring out all of the big guns and throw every cleaning product you’ve got at the problem. But don’t!

First of all, most cleaning products are plenty effective on their own. Plus, combining them could be toxic — and in some cases lethal.

A friend excitedly texted me last week: “I scored a well-loved cast iron skillet at a garage sale! What should I cook first?” These are my favorite messages to answer because I love cast iron cooking and I have strong opinions about where to start if cast iron cooking is new to you.

These five recipes will jump-start your relationship with a new cast iron pan and they are also very reliable recipes for rekindling your love of cast iron too — especially if your pan has been stored too long and is looking a little dry and lonely. Here’s the plan: Cook these five things, in this order, and watch your cast iron glisten and gleam before your eyes along the way.

Comment of the Week

“My Monday coffee group is my tribe and, in fact, that’s what we call this group of about 8 women ages 65 to 90. There’s a lot of wisdom around that table as well as laughter and, occasionally, tears. We’re of varying sizes and levels of activity and nutrition, but we support each other, which is what it’s all about IMHO.”

As much as I love all the hamburgers and hot dogs on the 4th of July, dessert has always been my favorite part. Leave it to my sweet tooth or the fact that all the best summer fruit is currently available. There are so many wonderful things to bake with all this fruit, on top of the fact that it’s a fun excuse to break out the red, white, and blue sweets.

Oh, and it’s prime s’mores season, so there are lots of chocolate opportunities as well. So no matter what you’re craving, one of these treats will be perfect for the 4th of July.

Whether your plans include a cookout, picnic, or day at the pool, there’s a chicken recipe that’s just right to make your holiday complete.
