Exercise provides an optimal clarity of mind to write. Focus on the minutiae of either coaching or training often brings the insights that become articles.

You’ve probably heard the expression, “Open sesame.” It’s a saying that’s supposed to have special powers to unlock the gates to a hidden trove of treasures. Did you ever wonder where that phrase came from?   It’s very much connected to seeds from the Sesamum indicum plant, which split open upon ripening. Since antiquity, the oils […]

Are you having trouble sleeping and difficulty controlling your worry? People with high-functioning anxiety experience such symptoms but are still able to get through the day, often due to sheer force. But being high-functioning doesn’t mean you aren’t suffering, and it doesn’t mean you don’t need help, support or to make changes in your daily […]

Things I’m Up to and Interested In

Better than “dog ate my homework”: “Mom, my class schedule is misaligned with my circadian rhythm!”

I’d wear one: A tooth sensor that tracks exactly what you eat.

Interesting concept to ponder: Is a combination of rising carbon dioxide and degenerating topsoil contributing to an increase in the carb:mineral ratio of our produce and, thus, obesity?

I don’t blame them: Some archaeologists feel threatened by the emerging field of ancient DNA.

Movie you should support: CJ Hunt is raising funds for a new feature length film, The Perfect Human Diet 2: Dispelling the Lies. This promises to be a critical counter to the constant stream of films parroting the opposite view—that animal foods are unhealthy and toxic, killing us and the planet—which has become accepted truth, despite being incorrect. Very important work being done here.

Comment of the Week

LOL. Wife actually makes amazing bone soups… dries the knuckle bones in the oven and scoops out fragments of the epiphysis / spongy bone to top our kimchi-avocado salads. These parts are a kin to croutons but way, way better in taste and nutrition. I call these “bone crumbs” and I’ve been trying to convince her to sell a line… in that case, she would ship!

– I’d love to spend a weekend at the Liver King B&B.

Raise your hand if you have a household chore that you just love to do. Even if you hate cleaning, you probably have your hand in the air. There’s always something. I love, love, love using the Shop-Vac. It’s incredibly satisfying to watch it cut a swathe through dust and dirt, swooshing everything up into its roaring nozzle. I can Shop-Vac all day long, and I always claim the job when we’re doing a big project. I even picked one out as a Valentine’s Day present once. (I know.)

It might not feel like it at the moment, but summer will be here before we know it. And with summer comes all the fun food stuff you can do outdoors, like picnics, cookouts, and shrimp boils.

Typically a shrimp boil is cooked in a large stockpot and then poured out onto a newspaper-covered table where everyone just goes for it and helps themselves. It’s extremely fun, and extremely messy.

So it’s no wonder this sheet pan shrimp boil from Damn Delicious is so popular on Pinterest. The recipe has been saved 302,000 times on the social platform — and for good reason! It’s a less messy approach to a shrimp boil with all the same great flavor.

When I was about 9 years old, I had what was simultaneously the best and the worst April Fool’s Day. The night before, I emptied every old-fashioned oat from a Sam’s Club-sized container of Quaker Oatmeal into my sister’s shampoo bottle. I distinctly remember feeling like a criminal mastermind — a combination of Shredder and Dr. Claw — and counting the seconds until she took her morning shower.

Fast forward to April Fool’s morning, when she squirted a gelatinous blob of floral-scented oatmeal onto her head, ran out of hot water trying to de-oat herself, and I was promptly grounded for wasting both bath products and breakfast foods.
