It’s been a long week. It’s finally Friday, and it’s the last hour of the standard work week, which means you’re probably catching up with your coworkers, tidying up your desk, and daydreaming about the weekend ahead. You might think the best part of your week has already arrived, but you’d be wrong. So wrong. Because your day is about to get better.

When you’re cooking on the go — whether you’re roughing it in nature or testing the limits of your Airbnb kitchen — it’s smart to think simple. Do go for these three-ingredient roasted potatoes; maybe save the two-day pasta sauce for when you’re in your kitchen at home.

I’ve always loved Halloween. Every year as a kid I’d dress up in my homemade costume and go door to door to ask strangers for candy. I’d shuffle through the crispy leaves, carrying my pillowcase and enjoying the faint chill in the air. But I’d shake my tiny fist at the people who had left their light off, or even worse, had the gall to give out boxes of raisins.

At the beginning of each month I take stock of the freezer and do a big grocery shop for ground beef and chicken breasts and thighs. When I get home I divide the beef into half-pound or one-pound portions. These are the amounts that most recipes call for, and I like the flexibility that it gives me to have pre-measured, recipe-ready portions of ground beef ready to pull from the freezer. To prep the meat for a stay in the deep freeze, I use a trick that I picked up from Pinterest.

Trader Joe’s has such a cult following that a new store opening brings front-page news and traffic jams. Our readers are not immune to TJ’s mania, and many of you consider Trader Joe’s an essential resource in stocking your pantry with staples and treats.

We read through past Trader Joe’s posts and comments (thousands of them!) to sift out some of our readers’ favorites. There was small consensus, with ardent devotees of many different products, but a few themes emerged and one product was the big winner at the top of the list. Can you guess what it is?

Just because you have a tiny cook space, doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to your dreams of having an eat-in kitchen. There are quite a few stylish, inexpensive tables (bistro or otherwise!) that will fit in super-small kitchens.

You might have to get a little cozy, but hey, that’s why you wanted a little breakfast table in the first place, right?

When news that a series of fires had broke out in the middle of the night, almost simultaneously, in several counties to the north, many San Francisco Bay Area people took it in stride. It’s wildfire season, after all, and most of us are used to observing this play out in the wilderness, a very safe distance from our homes.

But it didn’t take long to shake off that nonchalance as the real picture set in: Beloved and beautiful communities all over the North Bay were in flames, and tens of thousands of people were fleeing for their lives. It was time to get serious. It was time to start cooking.
