Jewish holidays always feature many special foods. Even amongst that crowded field, the Jewish New Year is unique. Rosh Hashanah is a two-day celebration filled with lavish dinners and post-services, nap-worthy afternoon meals highlighted with eating pastries.

For Jewish New Year, or Rosh Hashanah (literally the head of the year), apples and honey are the most familiar and universal symbols, but that’s just the start of symbolic foods for this holiday. Each is layered with meanings that have been honed, like a fine patina, over generations.

What also makes Rosh Hashanah so different is the singular focus on foods that are only sweet.

This year, I am into polka dots. I was also into polka dots last year, but will I be into polka dots three years from now, or 10? There is no way of knowing. By 2026, I could be going through a blue-and-white china phase.

Such is the difficulty of making design decisions: It is nearly impossible to know exactly what you will want in the future, but you will be stuck with that dinnerware until the end of time (or until you donate it to Goodwill).

So what are you to do if you are in the market for new dishes and don’t want to make choices you will inevitably regret? The answer, as with so many things, is to think simple.

Why should you know about Sergeant Nick Rians? First of all, Sergeant Nick is a very smart man. And for several years now, he has been almost superhumanly busy building a fitness program with specific grading and progressions, very similar to a martial arts belt-ranking system. It is called FitRanX and it could be coming to a gym near you soon.

I love Turkish get ups, but most athletes and trainees I speak to hold a completely contrary sentiment. I’m not here to tell you that your training is incomplete without them, but I know of no better tool to force your entire body to work as one cohesive piece. Smoothly performing a heavy Turkish get up requires high-level strength, coordination, balance, engagement, focus, awareness, and mobility. The training effect from this single movement knows no equal.

Glorification over. Actionable advice to follow.

Traditional bear claws are a bakery treat, made from a sweet yeasted Danish dough that is as delicious and delicate as it is time-consuming. Filled with chocolate and cut into an almost paw shape, bear claws can be made the easy way, with commercial, store-bought puff pastry.

No, it’s not exactly the same, but boy oh boy, puff pastry bear claws are incredible in their own right. Crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside, which is seemingly made up of a miraculous number of intricate tiny layers, this version takes only about an hour to make, including time to defrost the dough. I strongly prefer puff pastry made with butter for this recipe; it can be found at many large grocery stores and health food-style stores.

My love for cast iron is so deep and abiding that I won’t even let my own husband clean my beloved cast iron skillet. While there are myths aplenty about the curing, caring, and cleaning of cast iron, I subscribe to very few of them. In fact, here are six things that I will never do to a cast iron skillet.
