I found a story on 180 Degree Health written by a woman who became bulimic in her teens due to being told by a doctor that her BMI was high. My hope is that less and less doctors are using the outdated BMI chart. When I was 13 years old, I was told my BMI was high. My guess is that I was sub 8% body fat and simply had a decent degree of leg muscle mass for my height.

On a side note, have you seen Fiona Apple lately. She looks so much better at a healthy body fat level. I don’t post enough about eating disorders, but many of the mainstream women in Hollywood are beginning to get scary skinny!

I think calves may be a pretty darn stubborn body part. My thighs grow quickly with any type leg resistance, but my calves need several variations of set and rep schemes to increase in size. Here’s an innovative approach shown by Lee Hayward.

How to do this:

Pick a light weight that allows for a full range of motion.
Hold 10 seconds and top, then 10 seconds at bottom range.
Do reps like this until your calves are burning (3-5 reps).
Then pump out 15-20 fast reps in a  shorter range of motion.

Elliott Hulse explains in this video that posture can be effected by your emotional state. All the stretches and exercises in the world won’t fix this. Here’s the video.

This video is a little long, but seriously worth the time invested. I have a few areas I need to work on, like breathing deeper and assuming a confident posture as much as possible.

I don’t follow a primal or paleo diet full-time, but I’m a big fan of Mark Sisson. I got his last cookbook, The Primal Blueprint Cookbook, and use 3 of those recipes on a regular basis. My favorite recipe from that book is the “Transylvanian Stockpot” stew. Today he just released his newest cookbook, Primal Blueprint Healthy Sauces, Dressings and Toppings. Here’s the trailer for the book.

I was sent a pair of Fat Gripz for free a few years ago when they were first released. The funny thing is that I haven’t used them until this past month. I highly recommend these if you have stubborn forearms.

What I’ve found is that tall guys with large hands barely get any forearm growth from lifting weights because your grip doesn’t get challenged. This product will change all of that…and you will finally get to squeeze the bar when lifting (something you can’t do to a normal Olympic bar if you have large hands).

It also filled my inbox (a very good thing, in my opinion). True, it’s not usual subject matter for MDA. Living Primally, however, is about taking a full and nuanced view on enhancing our health. That’s what we’re all after, isn’t it? So, if we recognize how negative emotions #8211; when they’re allowed to linger beyond their natural, short-term function #8211; can undermine our physiological wellbeing, why not take a look at the flip-side? Is positive thinking mere psychobabble fluff as some would argue? Does it attract love, opportunity, and other good energies the universe has to offer? I’ll leave these angles for others to explore (although feel free to argue your own perspective on the board). […]

Fat loss; If you’re having problems with it, this post might help…I have a little project for you to help you hit the ground running for New Years.  I want you to start now…. As in right now – right this very minute. And what I want you to do is a little thought experiment.I want you to  STOP thinking about exercise as a way to burn calories and lose fat.Stop it. In fact, I want you to pretend that it’s not even possible, that somehow workouts don’t burn any calories at all.(I’m not saying that it’s actually impossible, I just want you to THINK that it is)I also want you to stop thinking about ways to build muscle with your diet.STOP!Obviously you do need food to build muscle, but for this experiment let’s stop thinking of magic combinations or timings, or reasons to massively overeat…Instead I want you to embrace the Eat Stop Eat approach and think of your workouts as a way to build or maintain your muscle, and think of your diet as how you lose body fat and maintain low (but healthy) levels of body fat. That’s it.No cross over.
