taido martial art

Taido was created by Seiken Shukumine. He began this Japanese martial art form in 1964. The meaning of Taido karate is “way of the body,” and it is based on a traditional Okinawan karate form called Te.
This was not the only time that Shukumine had developed a unique martial arts style. When he was only 25, he created a new kind of karate he called Genseirvu.
Karate and other fighting styles have been increasing in popularity in the West for a number of years. In those years, prior to the founding of Taido, most practice was simplistic and the common techniques for this “empty handed” style of fighting saw little change. yet, society was changing and Shukumine was a student of philosophy and tried to anticipate what would have to be changed as far as how classical martial arts methods of instruction were concerned.
Shukumine realized that there […]

The basis of Tabata Training is 4 minutes of intense interval training. What you are doing is taking an exercise we’ll use sprints as an example here. Sprint as hard as you can for 20 seconds Walk for 10 seconds Repeat 7 more times for a total of 8 sets. So what you have is a total of 4 minutes workout time. Tabata Training can be done with a number of different exercises the idea is to use an exercise that gets the whole body involved or at least the major muscle groups.Tabata Training can be done with Barbells, Dumbells, Kettlebells or just Bodyweight exercises. I’ll give you some other exercises and routines to try in a minute but first let me give you some background and how Tabatas work. Carne Asada

Carne asada, which translates as “roast meat,” is a festive and flavorful dish of thinly sliced marinated beef. The key to making amazing carne asada is a marinade that strikes the right balance of spicy, sweet and savory flavors.
Any cook who loves carne asada is likely to have their own secret blend of herbs, spices and marinating liquid and we’re thrilled Darlene has shared hers for the Primal Blueprint Cookbook Contest. (Enter your own Primal recipes for a chance to win a Primal prize package and to be included in the reader-created Primal Blueprint Cookbook. View all the details and the current theme here.)

When the ingredients for this marinade are all chopped and mixed together, take a long, deep whiff. The aroma of the marinade hints at the flavor to come. Warm spices, refreshing lime, the sweet scent of oranges and the malty aroma of beer will have you salivating […]

Tomatoes taste best in the peak of summer. Did you know in-season tomatoes pack nearly twice as much vitamin C as off-season varieties? I know it’s technically Autumn/Fall but the weather over here is still summer-ish so we have plenty of fresh tomatoes still around. This soup makes great use of these end-of-season tomatoes and is a perfect easy lunch idea.

I am going to dissect a recent Time magazine article called, "Why Exercise Won't Make You Thin". I do agree with parts of this article, but think a lot of this is bogus. The author simply isn't taking a strategic approach to exercise and seems to be complaining for his lack of results. That being said, I do agree with a few of his points. Let's dig in!

[While staying lean and losing body fat is largely about diet, you can magnify the effects of a good diet with the right types of exercise. Note: The photo above is a good example of eating smaller portions of your favorite foods.]

Cardio Queen. That was my unofficial nickname at the gym.I would proudly pop on my I-pod, pull out my trashy magazine, and a big bottle of water (Nalgene of course…I care about the environment people) and stay on my cardio machine for the entirety of my gym session. I Pumped away on a variety of machines…I have a particular addiction to the elliptical….my foolish mind believed this was how I was going to acquire those six pack abs I had always dreamed of. These machines will make me super sexy sculpted girl, I will be on the next Shape Magazine….Oh how foolish I was….
Well I can’t afford a personal trainer…even after giving blood three times in one month for extra cash….word to the wise DO NOT recommend this and I have tried the free weights and strength machines on my own without much success. Either I got bored very easily […]

Jose Henriquez is a tight-bodied point guard who grew up playing basketball on the dangerous streets of Camden City. He stands at 5’6” and weighs 160 pounds and is 18 years old. Just 2 years ago, he was 120 pounds. An intense fitness program he participates in at local workout facility Steve’s Club allowed him to gain 40 pounds of muscle, speed and agility on the basketball court. But more importantly—Steve’s Club has helped Jose to Beat the Streets. Steve’s Club is a non-profit organization giving young people from Camden the training, mentoring and coaching they need to be successful on the athletic field and in life.

“We are so grateful for CrossFit’s support,” said Steve Liberati, Executive Director and personal trainer at Steve’s Club, who services nearly 50 kids from Camden weekly. “Our mission is to provide a place for these kids to get away from it all. […]

Building Muscle and Fasting

A quick good news / not so good news post today about building muscle and fasting.
The Good news – Research shows (once again) that even 72 hours of fasting (way longer than I recommend) does not change whole body protein turnover or measures of protein oxidation (you’re not losing muscle).
The not so good news news – The same research also shows that that massive doses of insulin and amino acids after a fast are no more anabolic then they are in the fed state. In other words fasting didn’t some how turn you into a muscle building monster.
Bottom line – Eat Stop Eat is supported by EVEN more research showing it’s a great way to lose fat without losing muscle! You’re not losing massive muscle when you are fasting and you are not building massive amounts of new muscle because you are coming out of a fast (there’s no magic […]
