Getty ImagesIf I had a nickel for every time a female client told me they didn’t want to lift weights for fear of “getting bulky,” let’s just say I would have lots of nickels. While, yes, there is a purpose for dieting and cardio, the truth is that lean muscle cannot survive on the treadmill alone. In my experience, weight training still seems to be the biggest-kept secret for fat loss. You should know that unless you’re taking supplements to enhance muscle growth you won’t get bulky, because your body simply doesn’t have the hormones to get there naturally. Cardio only burns calories while you’re performing it, but strength training has what is known as the afterburn effect.

Oh sure, I do it almost every Friday night, after Friday lunch out at a restaurant, but that’s been the ONLY time I’ve been IF’ing since mid summer.I realized last night that I miss it!When I was more regularly intermittent fasting (in my case, not eating dinner or anything after a mid afternoon snack)…I felt AWESOME!  I felt light, free, mind crystal clear (always a wonderful thing at 63 LOL)…in control, on top of the world.I want more of that, again! So I’m going to start making it a point to IF through dinner at least twice, preferably 3 times, a week.Of course, to do this in a medically safe way, there are guidelines:1.  if you’ve never done this before, make sure you don’t have any underlying medical condition for which this would be unsafe.  Check with your regular physician first if you are unsure.2

MRT with Boot campThe sun is out and we are all geared up to get out and get active!! Whether it is going for a run, hitting the gym or playing a game of squash, as long as it move us towards that summer body –we get involved!!Here at Train, our home in the heart of Sandton, we are very fortunate to be able to blast out an amazing outdoor session at any point … and for those of us that are really keen… brave the pool as cool down JJ Outdoor training is a great way to get you burning away at that unwanted muffin top whilst soaking up some vitamin D.. But what do you do in a boot camp session??A great training method that you can use in your boot camp style training is MRT, Metabolic resistance training. No Magic – MRT is essentially fast-paced circuits, where you move from one exercise to the next with little rest in between.MRT workouts have been proven to be one of the most effective training methods for fat loss, both in and outside of the gym!The amount of calories you burn in an MRT workout can easily rack up or exceed 600 calories, depending on the routine.Topping that, the (EPOC) excess post-exercise oxygen consumption increases dramatically. As mentioned in previous articles EPOC OR afterburn, measures the energy expended to return your body to its normal, resting state after a workout!! Yes – equilibrium- that which your body is forever working towards

Part of the large part of the Etiology of weight gain is an incredibly strong feedback loop – And I’m not talking about insulin or leptin or some other hormone. No, I’m talking about something MUCH stronger. But before we go any further, lets clarify what I mean by Etiology. Etiology is basically the study of why something occurs, and in my opinion the only thing more important that finding a cure for obesity is understanding why it occurs in the first place. As I stated earlier this goes far beyond hormone imbalances or sugar cravings. Also, let’s be clear – overeating is the tool, it’s the hammer, or the nails… it’s what ‘makes’ us gain weight… but it may not be the ‘why’ that causes us to be gain weight… to find the ‘why’ we have to go all the way to the root – Why we overeat in the first place…And I’m convinced that a large part of the etiology of weight gain, or more correctly a part of the etiology of some forms of weight gain (I’m of the belief that they’re not all the same), is the feedback loop created by the affect that our emotions have on how we eat.For many of us, we over eat as a way to deal with our depression, boredom, loneliness or general unhappiness with our day-to-day lives.
