Unbelievably, I’m STILL recovering from Vegas.
It was a whirl-wind trip, and it was my first weekend away with Heather since the kids were born.
Great times, great food, great people.
But, I was also ‘working’.
Working in the fact that I made sure that I went to see the  BODIES exhibit at the Tropicana Resort.
Now, I’ve seen dissections before, but NOTHING like these.

(Bodies is a series of human cadavers put on display..kinda gross, but very educational)

It was the most fascinating display of human physiology I have EVER seen.
Especially when you realize what we look like with all the fat (and skin) stripped away –
WE ALL LOOK LIKE SUPER HEROES!
…All of us.

(maybe not EXACTLY like this…but you get the idea)

There is a certain uniformity to the human body.
Strip away the skin and fat and we all look very similar. and, there is something stunningly beautiful about our form. Thanks to the aesthics of […]

Eileen working out!

While most of us aren’t too worried about our appearance in the gym, the same could not be said of Eileen Alexanian. Eileen is the co-owner of Diamonds ‘n Dunes, with her jeweler husband Ken. Eileen knows the importance of fitness on the Outer Banks, and has been a member of KnuckleUp Outer Banks for some time now.
Eileen loves jewelry and wears plenty of it, and even retains a few pieces during her workouts. She works out constantly with Matt Costa as part of his kickboxing class, and the results speak for themself. Eileen’s diamonds aren’t the only thing about her that are brilliantly cut!
Eileen’s store, Diamonds ‘n Dunes, is the number one destination for unique jewelry on the Outer Banks. And the inside of the store is as different from the gym as you can get. Sweeping high ceilings, statues of mermaids and wild horses, and beautiful […]

More exciting news from PrimalCon! We have secured the appearance of national champion and US Olympic team runner Michael Stember. Stember shocked the track world as a Stanford undergrad, when his furious kick landed him a spot on the 2000 US Olympic team at 1500 meters. He subsequently enjoyed a long career as one of America’s top milers, and has recently relocated to Malibu, CA and become a Primal enthusiast. Michael will take participants through a unique sprint workout session, introducing some top secret drills and principles that he learned from the world’s top coaches and runners during his career. Known as a free thinker and innovator in the running community, PrimalCon participants will get a “kick” out of Michael’s refreshing attitude and precise instruction.
Our “green” consultant Nikki Florio has done an incredible job securing various sponsors for food and participant goodies. She’s helped us form an exciting alliance with […]

Where Are They Now?

Remember Michelle? Griff? Sterling? These are just a few of the Mark’s Daily Apple readers that sent in their inspiring success stories during last year’s Primal Blueprint 30 Day Health Challenge. I think I can say that we were all captivated by their stories. Testament to this fact are the numerous emails I receive from fellow-PBers asking how they are doing. Griff, for example, was just two weeks into going Primal when he originally wrote in. Michelle was nearly a year into her weight loss journey. How has the last 6+ months been for them and others? Read on to read (and see) their progress and check back next week for more success story updates.

Griff
As you probably know, since I went Primal back in August I have been an active member of MDA’s forums. I’ve established a reputation as the go-to guy for cholesterol questions (and I’m learning more about […]

If you’re truly interested in consuming the original Primal brain food, look no further than bone marrow: perhaps the first reliable source of large, fatty animal products our scrappy ancestors were able to procure. Yes, before we became spear-using cunning tacticians surrounding, stalking, and out-maneuvering large prehistoric ungulates, we feasted on the bones of fallen prey. Or, more accurately, we feasted on what lurked inside the bones (and the skulls, for that matter). Animal fat and protein improved the quality of our diet by making digestion less energy intensive. Bone marrow, especially, was highly caloric and nutrient dense, allowing early human ancestors to divert metabolic resources away from the costly digestion of roughage and toward bigger, costlier brains. This spurred the increase in hominid brain size that we still enjoy today.

That was around two million years ago, when Homo habilis used rudimentary stone tools to strip and smash bones. He […]

Before I get started with this post, I would like to address those of my American readers who are none too happy about the whole ObamaCare thing.
Before you start yelling at me that big government can’t “cure” anything, I am asking you to read a little bit further, chew on my ideas a little bit…and then tell me how private business could do everything I am proposing and do it better and cheaper.
Remember that I am from socialist Canada and that personally, I am a weird amalgam of libertarianism/social liberalism/fiscal conservatism.
Personally, I like to think of myself as a renaissance man for the 21st century.
.
Okay, here we go.
.
How can big gov’t cure obesity?
.
Let’s start by asking ourselves what do politicians like to do?
.

Take credit for good ideas
Increase tax revenue
Promise tax relief to the voters
And occasionally make life better for their fellow man.

All in an effort to ensure re-election….and yes, I […]

Lately I’ve noticed that a lot of people seem to HATE milk.
Weird.
Apparently this stems from an ongoing attack against milk, mostly from fitness personalities and raw food / vegan lifestyle advocates.
Typically, the anti-milk talk looks something like this:
Here’s some of the nasty surprises hidden in your milk:

Pus
Synthetic growth hormone
Dangerous Antibiotics

Plus, did you know that Pasteurization kills most of the enzymes in your milk rendering it practically indigestible?

Now here’s my issue:
This seems like a classic case of Parrot Phenomena…
People just echoing what other people said because it sounds good.
However, whether you are a Journalist or a Scientist..you know it’s of UTMOST IMPORTANCE to always check your references.
After all no one wants to be caught up in Food libel lawsuit.
(In many US States it is illegal to disseminate misinformation about foods…think of back when Oprah
Winfrey was sued by Texas beef producers for questioning the safety […]

This Easter I went head to head with my one of the most brutal foes I have faced so far: a cherry cheesecake covered in heavy whipping cream. Man versus cake in a fight to the finish.
While my last foe was impressive in terms of sheer power and bulk, it was also unsophisticated and predictable. I conquered it easily. This one had a trick up it’s sleeves. The heavy whipping cream was unexpected and deadly. I felt this was going to be a challenge; especially considering that I was weakend from the mounds of eggs, salmon, roasted lamb and assorted meats I had consumed minutes before.
At first it seemed cherry cheesecake was gaining the upper hand by dark powers of intimidation. Could I break through the thick outer shell of heavy whipping cream – and not to mention could I finish all of it? The task seemed impossible. Doubt was […]

The basis of Tabata Training is 4 minutes of intense interval training/circuit training. What you are doing is taking an exercise we'll use sprints as an example here.
Sprint as hard as you can for 20 seconds
Walk for 10 seconds
Repeat 7 more times for a total of 8 sets.
So what you have is a total of 4 minutes workout time.
Tabata Training can be done with a number of different exercises the idea is to use an exercise that gets the whole body involved or at least the major muscle groups.Tabata Training can be done with Barbells, Dumbells, Kettlebells or just Bodyweight exercises. I'll give you some other exercises and routines to try in a minute but first let me give you some background and how Tabatas work.
Tabata Training was developed by Izumi Tabata (imagine that) at the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Tokyo, Japan. They did a study on […]
